Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Lee Quo Wei and Lee Yick Hoi Lun Professor of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, has been named a Fellow of the American Association of Anatomy (AAA) 2019 in recognition of his excellence in science and contributions to anatomical sciences.

Professor Tuan said, “I am honoured to have the Fellowship conferred on me by the American Association of Anatomists – a prestigious organisation in the field of biomedical science.  I would like to thank my research team and partners who have worked with me and inspired me throughout my research journey.  The future of anatomical science and biomedical science is highly promising and I look forward to strengthening cross-regional and inter-disciplinary collaborations at CUHK to bring a better future to human health.”

Professor Tuan is an internationally renowned biomedical scientist, particularly in the field of tissue engineering and regeneration. His research activities cover basic science and engineering, as well as translational and clinical applications. He has a distinguished track record in the study of embryonic development and cell-cell interactions. In his recent research, by integrating “smart” biotechnology with his stem cell research, he has successfully developed translational applications for the repair and regeneration of human tissues. His research team has engineered the first-ever three dimensional joint-on-a-chip, the “microJoint”, to replicate a human articular joint using a microbioreactor platform. The microJoint is used to study and screen for potential therapeutic agents for osteoarthritis. Professor Tuan’s significant contributions have been internationally recognised. In 2017, Professor Tuan was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and, in 2018, a Fellow of the Chinese Association of Inventions for his accomplishments in innovation and translational research that have had a significant impact on society.

The American Association of Anatomy (AAA) was founded in 1888 with a mission to advance anatomical science through research, education, and professional development. AAA members include leaders in the fields of anatomical science research and education. The rank of Fellow is designed to honour distinguished AAA members and is in the top tier of all eligible members.
