The Chinese University of Hong Kong 23rd Honorary Fellowship Presentation Ceremony
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held its 23rd Honorary Fellowship Presentation Ceremony today (30 June 2025) on campus. Three distinguished people, listed below in alphabetical order by family name, were appointed honorary fellows in recognition of their remarkable accomplishments in their respective fields and their exceptional contributions to the University and the wider community.
Professor Ching Pak-chung currently serves as Director of the Shun Hing Institute of Advanced Engineering and Research Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at CUHK. His early career at Cable & Wireless sparked his interest in telecommunications, leading him to pursue further studies at the University of Liverpool, where he received his BEng and PhD. His research focuses on digital signal processing, particularly speech and communication systems. In recent years, his work has expanded to encompass speech emotion recognition, Cantonese-English code-mixing analysis and artificial intelligence.
Professor Ching joined CUHK in 1984 and has held key leadership roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Head of Shaw College and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University. During his tenure as Pro-Vice-Chancellor, he spearheaded the Campus Master Plan in response to the transition to a four-year curriculum, profoundly shaping CUHK’s long-term growth. He also played an instrumental role in the development of CUHK-Shenzhen and has served as Director of the Shenzhen Research Institute, CUHK, fostering collaboration between the University and organisations within the Greater Bay Area. Beyond academia, Professor Ching has made substantial contributions to public service, holding pivotal positions in various government and professional bodies. In recognition of his community work, Professor Ching has been awarded the Bronze and Silver Bauhinia Stars.
Professor Priscilla Leung Mei-fun is an alumna of CUHK and currently serves as a Legislative Council member, a barrister-at-law, an arbitrator of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission and an internationally recognised mediator. She began her studies in English Language and Literature at CUHK, then switched to the Department of Government and Public Administration. After graduation, Professor Leung pursued postgraduate studies in law at Renmin University of China, where she studied with Professor Xu Chongde, a key drafter of the Hong Kong Basic Law. She joined the Faculty of Law at the City University of Hong Kong in 1989 and initiated the monumental project of translating select court judgments from China into English, helping the world understand China’s judicial system and the progress of its legal reform. Her academic research focuses on the differences between the legal systems of Hong Kong and mainland China, as well as the laws of Belt-and-Road countries. Her monographs on the Basic Law, in both English and Chinese, are regarded as essential reference works. In 2000, Professor Leung was honoured with the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award. In 2008, she was elected to the Legislative Council to represent the Kowloon West constituency, and since 2018, she has been a member of the Hong Kong Basic Law Committee of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee. This March, she was invited to return to her alma mater to deliver a lecture titled “The Rule of Law under ‘One Country, Two Systems’” in the General Education China Programme. She also took the opportunity to share her personal journey, encouraging students to have the courage to strive for their dreams.
Professor Anthony Wu Ting-yuk is an Honorary Professor in CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University’s School of Chinese Medicine and Peking Union Medical College Hospital. He is also a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University and Chairman of the China Oxford Scholarship Fund. Previously, he was Chairman of Ernst & Young Far East and a member of the Ernst & Young Global Executive Board, becoming the first Chinese person to serve on the international board of a major accounting firm. He has assisted numerous mainland enterprises in listing on Hong Kong and overseas stock markets, while helping attract multinational corporations and foreign investment to Hong Kong, He was a trailblazer in the listing of H-shares and red-chip companies and was Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce from 2010 to 2012.
Professor Wu was Chairman of the Hospital Authority from 2004 to 2013, during which he revitalised its financial and administrative systems, responded to crises including avian flu and swine flu, promoted the development of traditional Chinese medicine and facilitated healthcare collaboration between the mainland and Hong Kong. He was also the sole Hong Kong representative appointed to the National Healthcare Reform Committee under the State Council. Following the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, Professor Wu led rescue missions and was the founding patron of the StandTALL Project, which provided prosthetics for the injured. He served as the patron of the Little Life Warrior Society, supporting children with cancer and their families, and founded the Hainan Sunshine Baby Foundation to aid underprivileged people with thalassemia. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Professor Wu collaborated with China’s National Health Commission and BGI Group to enhance testing capacity and reduce costs, facilitating joint pandemic control efforts between the central and Hong Kong governments. He was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong government in 2008, and served as a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference from 1998 to 2023 and of its Standing Committee from 2013 to 2023.
