CUHK hosts 2025 Innovation Day to showcase groundbreaking research and explore the future of AI
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) hosted its fifth CUHK Innovation Day today (26 September), with the theme “AI Empowerment”. Highlighting CUHK’s latest achievements in research, innovation and knowledge transfer, the event featured over 40 exhibitors, including 12 projects funded by the Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus Scheme (RAISe+), more than 10 CUHK-led startup initiatives based in Shanghai and over 20 startup projects founded by CUHK scholars, students and alumni.
The event brought together government officials, policymakers, industry leaders and experts to celebrate CUHK’s role in fostering innovation and synergy across the startup ecosystem. The kick-off ceremony was officiated by Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Dr Bernard Chan Pak-li, Executive Director of the Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises (OASES) Mr Bryan Peng Wenjun, Chairperson of the Committee of the Artificial Intelligence Subsidy Scheme Mr Hendrick Sin, Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited Dr Rocky Cheng Chung-ngam, Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation Mr Terry Wong Ping-sau, CUHK Provost Professor Isabella Poon Wai-yin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research) Professor Sham Mai-har and Associate Vice-President (Knowledge Transfer) Professor Allen Chan Kwan-chee.
During his opening remarks, Dr Chan remarked: “Hong Kong’s adaptability and resilience are our greatest assets. To better harness our strengths and drive our future economic frontier, we need collaboration among the government, academia and all relevant private and public sectors. We must work together to empower Hong Kong into a dynamic, innovative and indispensable player in the global system and economy. CUHK Innovation Day is certainly an important platform to fostering such collaboration, so I look forward to witnessing more success stories and fruitful partnerships driven by this platform.”
Professor Poon delivered welcoming speech, saying: “Innovation Day is a strategic platform where research meets the real world. It showcases how CUHK’s academic excellence translates into industrial solutions and fosters collaboration across academia, industry, and government. We are delighted to align with our government’s vision to position AI as a core industry. As Secretary Professor Sun Dong has emphasised, Hong Kong’s role as an international data hub and its unique position within the Greater Bay Area offer huge opportunities for AI development. CUHK is committed to being a strategic partner in bridging research, education, policy, and enterprise to drive meaningful change.”
Throughout the day, a series of thematic talks featured key insights from experts, including Mr Sin, who discussed policies to build Hong Kong’s AI ecosystem; Professor Helen Meng Mei-ling, Patrick Huen Wing Ming Professor of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at CUHK, who explored AI’s role in empowering students; industry leaders Mr Wang Pengcheng, R&D Technical Director of Jiangsu Aerospace Daway Technologies Co., Ltd., and Mr Howard Chu, General Manager of FanRuan Software Co., Ltd. (Hong Kong), who addressed AI and big data applications. A panel discussion followed, during which CUHK scholars and industry leaders shared their expertise and insights on “AI Empowerment: Bridging Innovation, Education and Industry for Societal Impact”.
The event also included guided tours for secondary school students, offering them the opportunity to visit exhibition booths showcasing innovative research projects led by CUHK scholars and engage with entrepreneurial CUHK students, sparking creativity and interest in entrepreneurship among the younger generation. Additionally, a livestream of an online guided tour in Putonghua was broadcast via the WeChat platform, showcasing CUHK’s innovation vitality and achievements to government, business and academic communities on the mainland, further promoting the development of the campus innovation ecosystem.
