CUHK School of Journalism and Communication Launches First-ever Undergraduate Programme in Global Communication in Hong Kong
With the globalisation and rapid development of social media, new challenges are emerging in the field of media and journalism. Students who want to pursue a career in the industry need to understand the operations of the local media industry and have the global mindset. The School of Journalism and Communication of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will launch a new four-year undergraduate programme in Global Communication (JUPAS Code: JS4858) in the 2017/18 academic year with the aim of nurturing global leaders in the various fields of communication, especially journalism and creative and digital media.
The new programme is built on collaboration with the School of Media, Film and Music, University of Sussex, UK. One of the unique features of the programme is the provision of practical training and global learning experience for the students. The intake quota of the new programme is 40, of which 20 for CUHK students and 20 for the students from the School of Media, Film and Music, University of Sussex. In the four-year programme, students will learn together in the UK and Hong Kong. In their second year, CUHK students will go for one compulsory year of resident study in the UK with the students of the School of Media, Film and Music, at the University of Sussex. During the third year, the students of the University of Sussex will come to Hong Kong and study Mass Communication Theories, Global Affairs and Public Issues and Intercultural Communication with CUHK students. Under this arrangement, the students of both universities can have opportunities to closely interact and widen their horizons. They can also have a comprehensive understanding of the development of the media industry in the two places. Apart from providing training in journalism and communication, the programme also organises study trips, visits to media agencies in Asia and Europe as well as summer internships to enable students to apply theory to practice.
