Due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, classes of all primary and secondary schools, and kindergartens in Hong Kong remain suspended. Students are being taught at home through different models. To increase students’ interest in learning at home, the Faculty of Education at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will launch the ‘CU in the Cloud’ programme on 6 April. With the support and guidance of teachers from the Faculty, student teachers have designed a series of free online classes covering various subjects and topics for primary, secondary and kindergarten students in Hong Kong.

The subjects offered in the online classes include Chinese Language (primary), English Language (primary), Mathematics (secondary), Physical Education (primary and secondary), and Early Childhood Education (kindergarten). Each subject covers different topics and content. Student teachers creatively designed their teaching materials by adding interesting elements such as news, songs, and cartoons to teach the subject in a lively and entertaining way. In addition, the student teachers will also share tips for DSE Mathematics candidates. Most of the online classes are taught in small class mode with around eight places per class. Student teachers can interact with learners in real time through the online platform, observe the learning situation of each student, and make corrections at any time. At the same time, they can also obtain first-hand teaching experience.

Wilson Lai Ho Wa, a Bachelor of Education (Mathematics and Mathematics Education) student who is participating in the ‘CU in the Cloud’ said, “While making ‘CU in the Cloud’ videos, I learned and improved on various skills such as voice recording, note taking and video editing. In addition, I kept practicing through watching a series of renowned online educational channels. I realised that good videos need not necessarily have difficult math content. More importantly, they should be inspiring and allow students to have a new understanding of mathematics. Hence, ‘CU in the Cloud’ videos are not just a tool to assist learning but also a way to inspire students to see the beauty of mathematics. I really hope that all viewers of ‘CU in the Cloud’, regardless of their level of mathematics, can develop the interest and motivation to learn mathematics after watching the videos.”

All primary, secondary and kindergarten students in Hong Kong are welcome to join ‘CU in the Cloud’. Limited places are available on a first come, first served basis. For details and registration, please visit the following website: https://www.fed.cuhk.edu.hk/cuinthecloud/en/
