Council consideration of proposed postponement of a government loan to the CUHK Medical Centre

8 Feb 2023

The Council of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) today discussed a proposal regarding the postponement of a government loan to the CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC).

The University has been fully cognisant of the challenges faced by CUHKMC since it commenced operations in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and recognises the pandemic’s significant impact on the hospital and its operations.

The University has been working constructively with the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to find a solution which would enable CUHKMC to continue to deliver ongoing value to Hong Kong’s health system.

CUHKMC is an integral part of the University’s commitment to serve the people of Hong Kong, and the University is delighted the Government has delivered this proposal and fully supports CUHKMC’s commitment to deliver additional services agreed with the Health Bureau to compensate for foregone interest.

CUHK is delighted the Council approved the proposed terms and is fully committed to backing this important contributor to Hong Kong’s health system, and ensuring that CUHKMC continues to receive strong support from across the University community.

The University hopes that the proposal generates strong support from the Legislative Council, and appreciates the constructive collaboration with the Government to ensure that CUHKMC fulfills its mission of pioneering solutions in healthcare.
