Dating back millennia, Chinese painting is astoundingly beautiful and culturally profound. The Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) collaborated with the Department of Fine Arts of CUHK and curated the exhibition The Bei Shan Tang Legacy: Chinese Painting in the autumn of 2019. The exhibition was well-received at the time. Responding to requests from academia and the public, the Art Museum is rerunning the exhibition to showcase the artistic achievements in painting from the Southern Song to the Qing dynasties with 120 exhibits. The exhibition will run from today till 25 July 2021. All members of the public are welcome and admission is free.

The exhibits are presented in ten sections, namely Landscapes of the Mind, Landscapes from Nature, Landscapes after the Past, Birds-and-Flowers and Miscellaneous Subjects, Daoist and Buddhist Realms, Portraits beyond Appearances, Fair Ladies, Yangzhou Painting, Guangdong Painting, and Women Painters, in the hope of offering visitors a road map for sampling the intriguingly complex and enduringly captivating domains of Chinese painting. Strolling through the exhibition galleries, visitors may feel like travelling back in time and discovering different facets of the past.

The exhibition showcases works by renowned painters such as Dai Jin, Xia Chang, Yan Zong, Lin Liang, Wen Boren, Dong Qichang, Wu Bin, Wang Shimin, Wang Jian and Wang Hui. Artworks in different genres such as Journey for a Family Reunion, Immortal with Deer, Wang Shizhen Composing Poems and Admiring Plum Blossoms, Lady Playing a Flute, and Bamboo and Rocks also demonstrate a wide range of Chinese painting styles. Another highlight of the exhibition is the “Women Painters” section. Butterflies by Wen Chu, An Elegant Pair by Ma Shouzhen, Looking down on the World by Sakeda Jiewen, and Lady under a Tree by Jin Liying exemplify the talents of women of the gentry and courtesan painters.

The Art Museum and the Department of Fine Arts of CUHK have co-published a set of three books in Chinese and English, The Bei Shan Tang Legacy: Chinese Painting catalogue, which is a good companion for those who want to have a thorough study on Chinese painting and culture from the Southern Song to the Qing dynasties.

The Art Museum also offers a series of online programmes such as live streaming tours and videos featuring painting demonstrations by seasoned artists. For more details, please visit the Art Museum’s website and social media platforms.
