Professor Song Chunshan, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Wei Lun Professor of Chemistry at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), has been elected as a 2025 Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Engineering (HKAE), in recognition of his outstanding achievements and exceptional contributions in the field.

Professor Song said: “I am honoured and humbled to be elected to the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering. I am deeply grateful to the members of HKAE for their support and confidence in me, to all the people who supported our research and development, and particularly to my current and former postgraduate students, and postdoctoral researchers. I will continue to promote the advances of science, engineering and higher education, and their integration, to address societal challenges in energy, the environment and sustainable development.”

Professor Song received his BSc in Chemical Engineering from Dalian University of Technology, China in 1982, MSc and PhD in Applied Chemistry from Osaka University, Japan, in 1986 and 1989 respectively. He was a Distinguished Professor of Fuel Science, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Director of the EMS Energy Institute at the Pennsylvania State University, University Park in the USA before joining CUHK. Professor Song has made pioneering contributions to sustainable energy solutions that bring the world closer to carbon neutrality, including molecular basket sorbents engineering for adsorptive CO2 separation; tri-reforming for the production of industrially useful syngas; and catalytic CO2 conversion, along with adsorptive and plasma catalytic conversion of SO2, as a part of an integrated system for the development of a sustainable supply chain of chemicals and fuels. His groundbreaking research has led to several new processes that have been verified in multiple industrial pilots.

With 530 refereed journal papers, 15 books and eight patents, he is a world-renowned leader in energy and chemical engineering, ranked 19th among 313,936 researchers worldwide in the sub-field of energy in 2024, according to Stanford University. He is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a Distinguished Fellow of the International Association for Carbon Capture. Professor Song was also honoured with the 2025 Michele Aresta Prize for Excellence in CO2 Utilization Research at the 22nd International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Utilization (ICCDU) held in Lisbon, Portugal in June 2025.  He also received the Carbon Capture Outstanding Achievement Award at the 4th International Conference on Carbon Capture Science and Technology in August 2025.

About the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering (HKAE)

Established in 1994, the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering (HKAE, formerly known as the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences) was formed by eminent engineers to promote science advancement and the practice of engineering for the benefits of Hong Kong. Apart from supporting education and research programmes, it engages in policy research and provides expert advice on engineering related matters to the government and other organisations.
