CUHK Organises the 2nd Belt and Road & Greater Bay Area Chinese Medicine Training Programme



In response to the national and Hong Kong government's plans to enhance the development of Chinese medicine along the Belt and Road Regions and in the Greater Bay Area, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organised the 2nd Belt and Road & Greater Bay Area Chinese Medicine Training Programme online from 17 to 19 August. With the support of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Bureau of Guangdong Province, the Programme, partnered with the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Ningxia Medical University; the Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Affiliated Hospital (Sichuan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine), the Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in promoting cooperation and exchanges among sectors of industry, academia and research between mainland China and Hong Kong. Undertaken by the School of Chinese Medicine, the Office of Strategic Developments and the Office of Academic Links (China), it saw the participation of over 130 scholars specialising in Chinese medicine from mainland China and Hong Kong.

Officiating guests joining the opening and closing ceremonies included Professor CHAN Wai-yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Professor YANG Jinsheng, Director of the Exchange Center for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao, National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Professor CHEN Dacan, President of the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Professor NIU Yang, and Professor Hao Yin-ju, Vice-Presidents of Ningxia Medical University. The Programme comprised of 18 thematic lectures and 3 thematic discussions conducted by different mainland and Hong Kong scholars, veterans and entrepreneurs in Chinese medicine, which aims to bolster sharing and exchanges among members in relevant fields in the two regions.  

Professor Zhang Zhongde, Vice-President of the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine and Associate Director of the Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine recently led a medical team to Wuhan for anti-epidemic work and was awarded the Chinese Physician Prize this year. He gave a thematic talk and shared his recent experience in the treatment of COVID-19 with integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine in Wuhan. Scholars specialising in Chinese medicine in mainland China and Hong Kong have also exchanged their experience and the problems they encountered during the pandemic.

First organised by CUHK in 2019, this Programme serves to enhance the levels of research on the foundation, transformation and clinical application of Chinese medicine, and to establish research networks for scholars with an international outlook to make joint efforts in promoting the continuous development of Chinese medicine.
