Professor Dennis, Lo, Associate Dean (Research) of CUHK Faculty of Medicine, today (15 February 2019) spoke on the topic “The Joys and Challenges of Scientific Research” in the second lecture of “The Pursuit of Wisdom” Public Lecture Series. The lecture drew around 200 CUHK staff members and students, alumni, secondary school students and members of the public. Professor Lo talked about the “Non-Invasive Prenatal Test” and the “Plasma DNA Screening Study of Nasopharyngeal Cancer” which he developed, and of his experiences and achievements in his field of scientific research. He had a fruitful discussion with the moderators and also took questions from the audience.

Invasive methods such as amniocentesis for Down syndrome testing were employed on pregnant women up to a few years ago until a new prenatal test was invented by a Hong Kong scientist which has benefited nearly 10 million pregnant women globally. It is the “Non-Invasive Prenatal Test” developed by Professor Lo. He actually spent 22 years transforming the relevant technologies from laboratory into clinical applications. This technology also led Professor Lo to enjoy the reputation of “Father of Non-Invasive Prenatal Test”.
