To celebrate the 55th anniversary of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the University launches “The Pursuit of Wisdom” Public Lecture Series which assembles the wisdom, strength and distinction of CUHK experts from across different disciplines and disseminates these in the community. The eight lectures cover various topics including translational medicine, artificial intelligence, food supply and sustainable agriculture, physics and the universe, history and psychology. Outstanding CUHK professors will present to the public their research experience and achievements and deliver abstruse knowledge in laymen’s terms. To launch the series, Professor Rocky S. TUAN, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK and Lee Quo Wei and Lee Yick Hoi Lun Professor of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, will give the first lecture on 11 January 2019.

Professor Tuan is an internationally renowned biomedical scientist specialising in tissue engineering and regeneration. His research activities cover basic science and engineering, as well as translational and clinical applications. By integrating “smart” biotechnology with his stem cell research, he has successfully developed translational applications for the repair and regeneration of human tissues. He engineered the first-ever three dimensional joint-on-a-chip, called the “microJoint”, to replicate a human joint using a microbioreactor platform. The microJoint is used to study and screen for potential therapeutic agents for osteoarthritis. Professor Tuan’s significant contributions have been internationally recognised. In 2017, Professor Tuan was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) and, in 2018, a Fellow of the Chinese Association of Inventions for his accomplishments in innovation and translational research that have had a significant impact on society. Professor Tuan will speak on the topic “Regenerative Medicine: Promises and Challenges” to explain his achievements in his field and give his views on the prospects for future technological development.
