CKY Education Charitable Trust and Choi Koon Shum Education Foundation Donate HK$50 Million to Support the Development of United College

The “CKY Education Charitable Trust and Choi Koon Shum Education Foundation” Cheque Presentation Ceremony was held today in gratitude for the HK$50 million donation made by Dr Jonathan Choi Koon-shum and Mrs Janice Choi Kwan Wing-kum, to support the development of United College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). 

Officiating guests included: The Honourable Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of the HKSAR; Dr Norman Leung Nai-pang, Chairman of the Council of CUHK; Professor Rocky S Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK; Ms Lina Yan Hau-yee, Chairman of United College Board of Trustees; Professor Jimmy Yu Chai-mei, Head of United College; Dr Jonathan Choi Koon-shum and Mrs Janice Choi Kwan Wing-kum, Representatives of the CKY Education Charitable Trust and Choi Koon Shum Education Foundation. Over 100 guests, including University Council members, College Trustees, University officers, political and business leaders, and friends of United College attended the ceremony to witness this important occasion for the College. 

At the Cheque Presentation Ceremony, Professor Rocky Tuan expressed his deepest gratitude to the Choi family for their exemplary generosity. He said, ‘CUHK takes pride in its unique collegiate system, which is vital to the implementation of General Education and Whole-person Education. This generous donation from the Choi family is an affirmation of and encouragement to United College and CUHK.’ 

The Choi family has always been supportive of charitable works and has contributed significantly towards education, technology advancement and cultural development in China. Over the past two decades, the Choi family has been a staunch supporter of United College. Dr Jonathan Choi has been a Trustee of United College since 1991. With the Choi family’s tremendous support, United College established the Choi Koon Shum General Education Resource Centre in 1995. Over the years, Dr Choi has donated and established a number of scholarships for United College students. The United College Choi Koon Shum China Employment Award Scheme was established to support students to have summer internships in Mainland China. Dr Choi also generously supported the Budding Scholars Exchange Scheme, enabling students of United College and Tsinghua University, Beijing to conduct joint research.
