The Chinese University of Hong Kong Holds 79th Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held its 79th Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees today (3 December). Prof. Joseph J.Y SUNG, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK presided at the Congregation.
Five distinguished persons were conferred honorary degrees in recognition of their outstanding contributions to their respective areas of achievement to educational, academic and cultural progress and the promotion of community welfare. They are: Prof. BAI Chunli, Prof. LIU Mingkang, Dr. Leo Rafael REIF, Prof. WU Weishan and Prof. Shinya YAMANAKA.
Dr. Leo Rafael Reif was conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. Prof. Wu Weishan received the degree of Doctor of Literature, honoris causa. Prof. Bai Chunli and Prof. Shinya Yamanaka received the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa. Prof. Liu Mingkang was awarded the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa. Dr. Reif was unable to come to Hong Kong to attend the Congregation due to a prior commitment. The University conferred the degree on him in absentia.
Besides the five honorary degrees, a total of 372 doctoral degrees were conferred at the Congregation. These included four Doctor of Medicine, 345 Doctor of Philosophy, 13 Doctor of Education, three Doctor of Music, five Doctor of Nursing, and two Doctor of Psychology.
