Eight outstanding students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have been awarded an Innovation and Technology Scholarship 2025, the highest number of awardees among the participating institutions. The scholarship was established to recognise talented students who possess a passion for innovation and technology, and provide them with opportunities to widen their international exposure and gain industry experience, nurturing their commitment to science and technology.

Each awardee will receive up to HK$150,000 for participating in a series of elite training programmes, including  overseas/mainland research attachments, a mentorship programme, a local internship, a service project programme, ideations and an achievements showcase.

Wong Wai-hiu, one of the awardees, a Year 3 student in the Bachelor of Social Science (Architectural Studies) programme, will study for a semester at the renowned architecture school at The Pennsylvania State University with full sponsorship from the scholarship. He said: “The school focuses on environmental sustainability and relevant construction technologies, which perfectly aligns with my career goal of becoming a green architect and construction manager.

“The scholarship not only provides opportunity to learn but also offers mentorship and internship connections that bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application. I am excited to bring back what I learn to CUHK and contribute to sustainability efforts in Hong Kong.”

Another awardee, Chow King-ngai, a Year 4 student in the Medicine (MBChB) Programme (Global Physician-Leadership Stream), is advancing a new technology called 3D histology, under Professor Lai Hei-ming of the Department of Chemical Pathology, which has the potential to improve cancer diagnosis. He said: “Using 3D histology to train histopathology AI with the dream of diagnosing cancer automatically with AI, I applied for the scholarship to get more opportunities to learn from top researchers worldwide.”

With the scholarship’s support, Chow will have the opportunity to learn about medical AI at Osaka Metropolitan University, and to attend the European Congress of Pathology to present his research findings on 3D histology and discover more about the latest research findings of international pathology professors.

About The Innovation and Technology Scholarship

Awardees are nominated by their universities and then selected by an Awardee Selection Committee with members from different sectors. There are 25 awardees per year.
