The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and to mark 25 years since Hong Kong’s return to China.

The ceremony commenced at 10.30am at CUHK’s newly installed flagpoles which will be the permanent home for raising the national flag on a weekly basis, as well as on major holidays. The national flag was raised alongside the HKSAR flag and the CUHK flag with all three raised to a rendition of the national anthem.

CUHK Council Members, staff, students, alumni, and over 200 dignitaries from an extensive range of backgrounds, as well as representatives of mainland organisations in Hong Kong, diplomats, and entrepreneurs with links to the University, attended the ceremony. Professor John Chai Yat-Chiu, Chairman of the CUHK Council, and Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor & President of CUHK, presided at the ceremony.

Speaking before the ceremony, Professor Tuan said, “the University community is honoured to share this moment in history with the people of Hong Kong, and to celebrate a major milestone in the continued development of ‘One Country, Two Systems’. Over the past 25 years, CUHK has proudly contributed to the integration of Hong Kong with the nation’s development, and today is an important opportunity to reflect on how far we have come, and consider the future contributions we wish to make”.

The flag raising ceremony was the centrepiece of a range of activities to be held by CUHK to celebrate the 25th anniversary. A joint concert named “Shared Roots, Shared Future CUHK & CUHK SZ Online Performance Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR” will also be staged on 2 July. Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor & President of CUHK and Professor Xu Yangsheng, President of CUHKSZ will deliver opening remarks at the concert which will be attended by staff, students and alumni from both campuses.
