Chung Chi College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Muse College at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen) and Choi Kai Yau College at The University of Macau (UM) organised the “2025 FC Lo Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Study Tour”. Since its launch in 2023, the study tour has held three editions. The programme aims to foster collaboration among youth from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, so they can explore and seize opportunities in the Greater Bay Area (GBA).

The research and study tour is exclusively sponsored by CUHK alumnus (Chung Chi College, Geography, 1970) Mr. Lo Foo Cheung, JP, Founder and Chairman of FC Packaging Group. This year, nearly 70 students from the three universities were selected to participate in an 11-day tour. Through industry-academia integration, cultural visits and academic seminars, the programme aims to help students understand the latest development of the nation and contribute to the GBA’s growth.

The opening ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, who witnessed the launch of this year’s study tour, including Mr. KC Yuen, Vice President of CUHK-Shenzhen; Professor Henry Wong Nai-ching, X.Q. Deng Presidential Chair Professor of CUHK-Shenzhen; Professor Kwan Mei-po, Head of Chung Chi College at CUHK; Professor David Chen Yongqin, Master of Muse College at CUHK-Shenzhen; Professor Janny Leung May-yee, Master of Choi Kai Yau College at UM; Ms. Chan Kit-ling, Commissioner for the Development of the GBA; Mr. Shang Hailong, Legislative Council Member; and Mr. Lo, the sole sponsor of the programme, along with his family.

At the opening ceremony, Professor Kwan, Professor Chen and Professor Leung delivered welcome addresses and exchanged commemorative gifts. They emphasised that  university colleges are committed to holistic education, and that experiential learning and field studies are essential components of informal education beyond the classroom. They highlighted that universities in the GBA, through educational collaboration, share the important responsibility of nurturing future contributors to the region’s development. They expressed their hope that students would take this study tour as an excellent opportunity to broaden their horizons and deepen their sense of national identity and civic responsibility.

Professor Rance Lee Pui-leung, former Head of Chung Chi College and a member of the Board of Directors of Muse College, highlighted that the theme of this year’s study tour focuses on opportunities for the GBA amid AI innovation and global political-economic transformation. He encouraged students to embrace their mission and expressed his best wishes for the success of the study tour in contributing to the development of the GBA and the nation.

At the opening ceremony, Professor Ling Kar-kan, former Director of Planning of the Hong Kong SAR government and alumnus (Chung Chi College, Geography, 1980),  delivered the keynote speech “Development trends of the Greater Bay Area as seen from planning projects”. He provided an in-depth analysis of the development trajectory and future direction of the GBA. Professor Ling emphasised that the GBA is “a core pillar of the national regional development strategy” and its planning must adopt a macro perspective, positioning city clusters as fundamental units to compete on the global stage. Acknowledging the current geopolitical turbulence and downward economic pressures, he said that “challenges and opportunities coexist.” He urged the GBA to rise to the occasion: “This is a historic responsibility entrusted by national rejuvenation – and a golden opportunity for youth to pursue their ambitions and realise their potential.”

Student representatives from the three universities shared their experiences, commenting that the study tour would showcase the power of cultural integration and foster committed friendships among youth from the three regions, laying a solid foundation for future development.
