CUHK faculty member Vivian Ip makes history as first Hong Kong conductor to win prize at prestigious International Ferenc Fricsay Conducting Competition
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is proud to announce that Ms Vivian Ip, Lecturer in the Department of Music and Associate Conductor of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, has been awarded third prize at the 2025 International Ferenc Fricsay Conducting Competition in Hungary. The first conductor from Hong Kong to be honoured with a prize at the prestigious competition, Ms Ip stood out from over 460 talented conductors from around the world, showcasing her exceptional artistry, leadership and technical prowess. This achievement underscores Hong Kong’s rising prominence on the global classical music stage.
The competition, named after the legendary Hungarian conductor Ferenc Fricsay, aims to discover emerging conducting talents and is a premier biennial event in the international music world. Its inaugural edition in 2023 drew wide international interest and a robust field of participants. The second edition took place from 31 August to 7 September, 2025 in Hungary, featuring a world-renowned jury. Prize-winners, including Ms Ip, receive prestigious guest conducting engagements with major international orchestras.
Ms Ip’s academic journey began at CUHK, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music with first class honours. She then earned a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Indiana University Bloomington and a Magistra Artium in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, graduating with the institution’s highest award.
Reflecting on her achievement, Ms Ip expressed her profound thankfulness and humility. “To stand out among 460 fellow conductors and claim third place in this competition is an immense honour and fills me with gratitude,” she said. “Conducting is by no means easy; it requires tremendous effort, focus and perseverance. This achievement is not just the result of my personal hard work but also the culmination of the support, encouragement and opportunities provided by my family, friends and mentors. Without their companionship, understanding and belief in me, I could not have achieved this.”
She also shared insights into the gruelling competition process, which spanned four intense rounds. “The competition was incredibly demanding. Each round was tightly scheduled, often giving us less than 12 hours after advancing to prepare the next piece. Every minute felt like a race against myself, demanding unrelenting persistence without a moment’s slack.”
As a conductor from Hong Kong, Ms Ip takes great pride in her role. “I am incredibly proud to represent Hong Kong in this competition and to let more people see the talent and hard work of Hong Kong musicians. I hope my success encourages more young people in Hong Kong to chase their dreams boldly, without fearing difficulties, and to persist on their own paths. Dreams are never too late to pursue; as long as you are willing to take that first step, what you ultimately win is not just a prize but also self-respect and affirmation.”
CUHK congratulates Ms Vivian Ip on this remarkable accomplishment, which exemplifies the Department of Music’s and the University’s commitment to nurturing world-class talent. As a faculty member, Ms Ip continues to inspire students through her teaching and performances, bridging academic scholarship and professional artistic practice. This award not only serves as a recognition of Ms Ip’s artistry but also highlights CUHK’s important role in promoting artistic innovation and fostering global outreach.
