The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is delighted to hear that CUHK-CAS joint laboratories have been commended for outstanding performance in an evaluation of 22 CAS joint laboratories in Hong Kong, conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Furthermore, CUHK has been honoured to be invited to become one of the founding members of the CAS-led Alliance of International Science Organisations (ANSO) in the Belt and Road Region. CUHK will also participate in two major events to be held in November; the Second International Science Forum of National Scientific Organisations on the Belt and Road Initiative in Beijing and the annual touring exhibition in Hong Kong, displaying technological and innovative achievements made by CAS.

Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, remarked, “I would like to express my appreciation to the collaborative research team and my thanks to all CUHK members who have made an effort in CUHK-CAS cooperation.”

Professor Tuan also addressed the importance of further cooperation. “CUHK and CAS have been collaborative partners for more than 30 years in various research fields. We have established forward-looking and internationally competitive joint research entities. I hope that CUHK and CAS can further strengthen our relationship, cooperate in the Belt and Road initiative, and promote innovation and technology in Hong Kong and mainland China.”

In order to push forward CUHK’s development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area and Belt and Road countries, Professor Chan Wai Yee was recently appointed as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Developments) to capitalise on the development of innovation and technology initiatives and research opportunities recently announced by the Central and Hong Kong governments.

CUHK will continue to foster cooperation with mainland China’s higher education institutions, especially in the field of education, research and commercialisation. As far back as 2006, CUHK, CAS and the Shenzhen municipal government jointly established the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology-Chinese Academy of Sciences. A year later, the Shenzhen Research Institute of CUHK was also founded. An Entrepreneurship & Innovative Hub under the Shenzhen Research Institute was opened last year to provide assistance to CUHK scholars and alumni who aim to start businesses in mainland China, promote research, knowledge transfer and in-depth cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and contribute to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area.
