The Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (HKIAPS) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) hosted the second forum of “35th Anniversary Celebration Public Policy Forum Series” today (June 20). The event attracted over 50 local politicians, scholars and members of the public to the campus, while nearly 100 viewers joined via livestream and participated in discussions.

Officiating at the forum were Mr Andrew Lai Chi-wah, JP, Permanent Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury (Treasury) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, and Professor Anthony Fung Ying-him, CUHK’s Dean of Faculty of Social Science and Director of HKIAPS, with both delivering opening remarks.

At this pivotal juncture of global economic restructuring and escalating regional competition, the Hong Kong economy is confronted with a crucial opportunity to transform and upgrade. The event provided a platform for participants to share their insights and policy recommendations on Hong Kong’s economic development, driving the steady, robust advancement of the city’s economic transformation.

The forum delved into key topics such as the change in consumption patterns, challenges for Hong Kong’s public finances and strategic reorientation of Hong Kong’s industrial portfolio. It aimed to equip young participants with the skills for good economic insight and help them unlock their political potential.

Three distinguished speakers shared their expertise: Professor Terence T. L. Chong, Executive Director of Lau Chor Tak Institute of Global Economics and Finance at CUHK, elaborated on paradigm shifts in Hong Kong consumer behaviour; Professor Billy S. C. Mak, Associate Professor in the Department of Accountancy, Economics and Finance at Hong Kong Baptist University, analysed the institutional constraints on Hong Kong’s fiscal sustainability; and Dr Hoey Lee, Legislative Council Member in the Hong Kong government, shared his viewpoint on Hong Kong’s evolving industrial positioning.

The forum established a diverse dialogue platform for politicians, academics and the public, deepening societal understanding of Hong Kong’s economic transformation opportunities. It also aimed to broaden the policy perspectives of the younger generation, equipping future governance leaders with knowledge of national strategies and global trends, and allowing them to better navigate an ever-evolving landscape.
