More than 530 boxes of CUHK mooncakes have been sold after another overwhelming response from CUHK staff, alumni and students in the third consecutive year of production. For each box sold, a free mooncake was delivered by the CUHK∙Care service team to the elderly living alone in Shatin and Tai Po. Many of those who purchased the CUHK Mooncake gave all their purchased mooncakes to the elderly. As a result, more than 1,000 pieces of CUHK Mooncake were delivered. In addition, profit gained from the mooncake sales, which amounted to over HK$60000, was all donated to the I∙CARE Programme of CUHK to support the development of students.

In the past two weekends, over 150 volunteers have delivered these CUHK mooncakes and gifts to the elderly.

CUHK mooncakes with multiple meanings

The production of the CUHK Mooncake serves several purposes. It supports local social enterprises, shows concerns for the elderly, and raises funds for the I∙CARE Programme of CUHK. The charity CUHK Mooncake is baked by Caritas La Vie, a social enterprise which provides, through its baking workshop, jobs and training opportunities to vulnerable groups such as ex-mentally ill persons and persons with disabilities to help them recover and integrate into society. For the first time, Professor Joseph Sung, the Vice-chancellor and President of CUHK, participated in the production of mooncakes and talked about his views on loneliness in a video.

The CUHK I∙CARE Programme will receive the profits of the mooncakes sales as a subsidy. The programme is a fully integrated project, which aims to promote students’ holistic development through social and civic engagements, and to facilitate their initiatives in community services. The funds raised in this event will be used to facilitate the personal growth of students, and to nurture young elites who are willing to commit to society.

The gift bags delivered to the elderly are sponsored by Strategic CSR Network, a non-profit organisation. It aims to serve underprivileged communities in Hong Kong on an ongoing basis, by connecting and bringing together different parties, including corporations, NGOs/charities and volunteers to achieve common goals.

CUHK∙Care service team

CUHK∙Care service team was established at the CUHK Golden Jubilee in 2013 to encourage all members of CUHK, including students, staff, alumni and friends, to assemble their powers to contribute to our society through CUHK’s benevolent humanistic culture. Since its establishment, the team has grown to a membership of over 900 people and participated in more than 200 social services with different non-profit organisations.
