Professor Chiu Chi-yue, Dean of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s Faculty of Social Science, spoke on the topic “Mindset and Success: the Psychology of a Flourishing Life” in the seventh lecture of “The Pursuit of Wisdom” Public Lecture Series today (23 September). The lecture drew about 200 CUHK staff members and students, alumni, secondary school students and members of the public. Professor Chiu talked about his experiences and achievements in his field of academic research. He had a fruitful discussion with the moderator and also took questions from the audience.

Everybody craves a flourishing life, but what is the formula for it? A research shows that growth mindset is a major component. Growth mindset refers to the belief that one’s talents can be developed with effort, learning and dedication. In this lecture, Professor Chiu illustrated with scientific evidence how cherishing this belief confers hope in the face of frustrating obstacles and supports perseverance despite disheartening failures, and thus enables people to relish in accomplishments through traversing the peaks and valleys of life. He also recommended practices that can be performed to help oneself and one’s family build a flourishing life in trying times.
