The Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (HKIAPS) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organised a Public Policy Forum Series today (30 May) to mark its 35th anniversary celebration.

The Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (HKIAPS) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organised a Public Policy Forum Series today (30 May) to mark its 35th anniversary celebration. The event attracted more than 50 local politicians, scholars and members of the public to the campus, while nearly 100 also participated via live streaming.

The forum was officiated by Mr Stephen Wong Yuen-shan, Head of the Chief Executive’s Policy Unit of the Hong Kong government, and Professor Anthony Fung Ying-him, Dean of CUHK’s Faculty of Social Science and Director of HKIAPS, with both delivering opening remarks. Amid the rapidly changing global landscape and increasingly complex international geopolitics, the event provided a platform for aspiring individuals to share their insights into and policy recommendations for Hong Kong’s governance, fostering steady development under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework.

The forum delved into key topics covering the essential qualities of next-generation political leaders, the critical stages of policy implementation, and governance opportunities under “One Country, Two Systems”. The discussions aimed to equip aspiring leaders with the insights needed for effective governance and unlock their core political potential. Three distinguished speakers shared their insights:  Professor Lau Siu-kai, Emeritus Professor of Department of Sociology at CUHK, elaborated on the critical role of governance talent in Hong Kong’s future development; Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, Chair Professor and Advisor (Public Administration) of Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies at The Education University of Hong Kong, analysed the governance opportunities and challenges facing the HKSAR, exploring how Hong Kong can leverage its strengths to tackle current issues; and Mr Cheung Chi-kong, Executive Director of the One Country Two Systems Research Institute, focused on the practical challenges and future prospects of the “One Country, Two Systems”.

The forum provided a diverse exchange platform for politicians, academia and the public, deepening societal understanding of governance opportunities under “One Country, Two Systems.” It also broadened the policy perspectives of the younger generation, equipping future leaders with knowledge about national strategies and global trends to navigate an ever-evolving landscape.
