MoCC Environment Fair 2017

CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia (Gaia) will hold the MoCC Environment Fair 2017 on 22 and 23 April (Saturday and Sunday) at Cityplaza in Taikoo Shing. The environment fair is an annual signature event of Gaia that brings great pleasure and promotes green messages to the public. The theme of the 2017 fair is ‘Climate Action’. An original play presented by the Environment Bureau of the HKSAR Government and the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (MoCC), The Drama of Climate Change, will be given its first public performance at the fair. All members of the public are welcome. Admission is free.

The opening ceremony of the MoCC Environment Fair 2017 will be held at 1:30 pm on 22 April (Saturday). Officiating guests include Mr Wong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment of the HKSAR Government, Mr Leong Cheung, Executive Director, Charities and Community of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Dr Rebecca Lee, Founder of the Polar Museum Foundation, and Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK and Chairman of the Steering Committee of Gaia. A successful community-based climate action of Gaia, the Carbon Reduction Project, will be introduced at the ceremony.

Interactive information and game booths, hosted by several of Gaia’s strategic partners, will be available at the two-day fair. The Environment Bureau booth will feature the ‘Climate Ready@HK’ campaign. The Eastern Community Green Station booth will offer a participatory game to raise environmental awareness. The students of Holy Family Canossian College, who won the gold award of the Environmental Booth Contest of the Green Leadership Camp 2016, will showcase their winning booth. MoCC will present a panoramic virtual tour to enhance the community’s awareness of climate change. After the virtual tour, visitors can participate in a quiz and win a limited-edition souvenir.

The Drama of Climate Change will be performed by the renowned Chung Ying Theatre Company. In response to ‘Climate Ready@HK’, the play is written to include actor-audience interactions, inspiring the audience to think critically about the issues of climate change, to take action to develop a low-carbon lifestyle and to work together to reinforce Hong Kong’s resilience in combating climate change.

To encourage individual climate action, MoCC interns will introduce the concept of upcycling and demonstrate the making of upcycled products such as eco-friendly bags and orange candles. The public is welcome to join this hands-on experience to convert waste materials into new, useful products.

CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia

CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia is a five-year community engagement programme, launched in 2012 by CUHK, with a generous donation of HK$70 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. In support of Gaia’s commitment to paving the way to a sustainable future for Hong Kong, the programme’s aim is to promote environmental conservation and sustainability in local communities, through public education and carbon-reduction partnerships with schools and non-governmental organisations.

The first of its kind in the world, the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (MoCC), maintained by Gaia, is open to the public with free admission. The MoCC showcases the ‘Three Poles’ (the North Pole, the South Pole and Mount Everest) collection of renowned Hong Kong explorer Dr Rebecca Lee, innovative research on the environment, energy and sustainability initiated by CUHK, and the Jockey Club’s initiatives to promote green living in the community.
