Groundbreaking Ceremony for “Chung Chi Student Development Complex”

Chung Chi College (CCC) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the “Chung Chi Student Development Complex” on Monday, 28 May 2018, symbolising the commencement of the construction. The Student Development Complex, expected to come into service in 2021, will provide students with twin buildings with new collaborative spaces for learning and activities, enriching the students’ experience and personal growth.

Officiating at the ceremony were Professor Rocky S. TUAN, Vice-Chancellor and President, CUHK, Mr. Aubrey K.S. LI, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, CCC, Mr. Karl C. KWOK, Chairman of the Development Committee, CCC and Professor FONG Wing Ping, Head, CCC. Over 100 honoured guests, members of the University and supporters of the College attended the ceremony.

Professor Rocky S. TUAN showed his support for the development project. He remarked on the mission to implement the college system in CUHK – to offer non-formal learning opportunities which complement the formal curricula to enhance students' whole person development. “By providing more indoor areas for activities and learning, ‘Chung Chi Student Development Complex’ is expected to be a platform to promote non-formal education, nurture students’ interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity and build up their confidence as well as a sense of responsibility, equipping them to cope with the changing society,” Tuan said.

Mr. Karl C. KWOK recalled the history of the development of CCC. Over the years, the College has been reviewing its campus facilities and student programmes to provide the very best for its students. “The Groundbreaking Ceremony marks the initiation of the campus development project and the optimal use of land to provide students with sufficient indoor space for student learning and activities,” Kwok said. “With the support and contributions from alumni and friends of Chung Chi, the twin buildings are expected to be completed and commissioned during the 70th Anniversary of Chung Chi College.

In response to the demand for on-campus student development, CCC has been preparing for the campus development project since 2014. The “Chung Chi Student Development Complex” is one of the main constructions in the College development blueprint. As a redevelopment of Staff Quarters Blocks D and G, the Complex is of a twin design, consisting of a Student Development Centre (the Low Block) and a Multifunctional Building (the High Block) connected by two foot bridges. The Complex offers a wide range of facilities, including a mini theatre, a caring centre, a roof garden, multipurpose activity rooms, music practice rooms, society rooms, learning commons, and leisure corners to support the need for collaborative learning, event planning, personal growth and social interaction among students, College staff, and alumni. The total cost of the project is expected to be over $200 million, mainly supported by the Chung Chi Board of Trustees and raised by the College. Upon its completion in 2021, the Complex will increase the learning and activity area for Chung Chi students by at least 13,000 square feet.
