To encourage ongoing learning at home and self-improvement by acquiring knowledge in various areas during the pandemic, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has organised the “Class Acts” CUHK Online Talk Series. The first talk was held today (20 March 2020) when Professor Alan Kam Leung Chan, Provost of CUHK and J.S. Lee Professor of Chinese Culture, spoke on the topic “Higher Learning in the Era of Industry 4.0” to launch the series. The talk drew close to 500 CUHK students, staff members, alumni and members of the public to participate through the video conferencing platform Zoom.

In the talk, Professor Chan set out his views on how university education is responding to global challenges and the development of Industry 4.0. He believes that with the rapid development of technology, university education, in addition to imparting knowledge, must strive to cultivate students’ digital literacy and other soft skills to achieve the goal of whole-person education. In addition, university education also needs to integrate arts and science as well as Chinese culture and global humanities in the Western tradition. A Q&A session was arranged, and Professor Chan responded to online questions from the participants.

The second talk will be held on 25 March 2020 with Professor Irwin Kuo Chin King, Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering who will speak on the topic “A Traveler’s Guide to the 3-pound Universe”.
