CUHK Appoints Masters of CW Chu College and Wu Yee Sun College

The Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has approved the appointment of Professor Wong Suk Ying as Master of CW Chu College for four years from 1 July 2021, succeeding Professor Chan Wai Yee. The Council has also approved the re-appointment of Professor Anthony Tak Cheung Chan as Master of Wu Yee Sun College for a further period of three years, with effect from 1 August 2021. The University expresses its deepest gratitude to Professor Chan Wai Yee for his long-standing support and sterling contribution to the CW Chu College, and for his continuing service to CUHK as Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Wong Suk Ying Appointed Master of CW Chu College

Professor Wong Suk Ying is Associate Vice-President of CUHK, Professor in the Department of Sociology, and Director of Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. Professor Wong is the Founding Fellow of the CW Chu College, and has been devoted to the planning and development of the College since its establishment. She was also appointed as the first Dean of Students of the College (2012-2016) and has been the College’s Hostel Warden since 2014.

Professor Wong received her undergraduate training at the University of Liverpool, and obtained her PhD from Stanford University. Prior to joining CUHK in 1997, she was a teaching faculty at several other higher education institutions in the United States and Japan. Her teaching and research profession began with a Spencer Post-doctoral Fellowship award from the US National Academy of Education and being named a distinguished junior Research Fellow by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 1990. Professor Wong’s primary interests are the sociology of education, institutionalism and social organisations, and higher education with recorded research grants funded by the Hong Kong Research Grant Council (RGC), and a research scheme launched by RGC and the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). She was also a recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award (2005), CUHK.

Professor Wong has an active record of community service both at home and abroad. She serves as the Director of the Board of Management, Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS), Hong Kong, a committee member of the Council of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, and a member of the Research Council of Our Hong Kong Foundation. Formerly, she also served as a member of the Joint Committee on Student Finance, Working Family and Student Financial Assistance Agency, Hong Kong (2013-2019), an External Examiner for the Nursing Council of Hong Kong (2013-2019), and a Subject Specialist for the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (2003-2018). By invitation, she was an Honorary Guest Professor with the School of Ethnology and Sociology, Minzu University of China in 2000, and a member of the International Advisory Board, Academy of Korean Studies, Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, South Korea (2011). She was the former co-president of the Comparative Education Society of Asia.

Professor Wong said, “I am honoured to be offered the position as Master of CW Chu College and I have witnessed the rapid growth and many breakthroughs of the College since its establishment. The College has distinguished itself by its trust in fostering students’ personal commitment and their sense of responsibility and integrity. My colleagues and I will uphold the spirit and values the late Dr. C.W. Chu exemplified and encourage students to devote their knowledge and service to society.”

Professor Anthony Tak Cheung Chan Re-appointed Master of Wu Yee Sun College

Professor Anthony Tak Cheung Chan joined CUHK in 1993 and is currently Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Professor of Clinical Oncology of the Faculty of Medicine and Dean of the Graduate School, CUHK, and served as Associate Dean (External Affairs) and Chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology at the Faculty of Medicine. Professor Chan graduated from University College London in 1988, and received postgraduate training in the Royal Marsden Hospital, UK and a M.D. from CUHK in 1998. He is a pioneer of clinical oncology, especially in the treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma and has published over 430 peer-reviewed papers.

Professor Chan is Director of the Hong Kong Cancer Institute, and the Sir YK Pao Centre for Cancer, Associate Director of the State Key Laboratory of Translational Oncology (CUHK), Chief Director of Phase 1 Clinical Trial Centre, CUHK, the Vice-President of the Hong Kong College of Physicians, and Honorary Professor of Peking Union Medical College Hospital. He has been invited to give over 200 lectures, including the Sir David Todd lecture (2008) and the Gerald Choa Memorial Lecture (2013) by the Hong Kong College of Physicians, and Waun Ki Hong Memorial Lecture by Yonsei University College of Medicine, South Korea this year.

Professor Chan was a founding fellow of Wu Yee Sun College, and later served as the Associate Master of the College and was appointed as Master in 2017, leading the team to ensure a stable development of the College. Professor Chan is also serving in a number of public positions. He is a member of the Panel of Assessors of The Hong Kong Medical Council and for the government’s Food and Health Bureau, a member of its Cancer Coordinating Committee, and the Expert Advisory Panel in Cancer of its Health and Medical Research Fund. He was a member of Advisory Committee of the HKSAR Government Security Bureau’s Admission of Quality Migrants and Professionals (2014-2020), and member of the Education and Accreditation Committee of the Hong Kong Medical Council (2011-2020).

Professor Chan said, “I am delighted to have been re-appointed as Master of Wu Yee Sun College.
