Mr. Edmund Chan is a former Partner at Baker McKenzie, where he specialized in Hong Kong capital markets and mergers & acquisitions. He subsequently served as Head of Legal in Hong Kong of a Chinese conglomerate, with a team recognized by Legal 500 for the GC Powerlist: Hong Kong Teams. In 2021, he transitioned from legal practice, and in 2023, founded Bot4Pro Limited, a company developing AI solutions tailored for lawyers. Bot4Pro is an incubatee under the Cyberport Incubation Program. In addition to his legal experience, he holds an executive MBA (EMBA-Global Asia) from Columbia University, London Business School, and The University of Hong Kong—a journey that inspired his commitment to innovation in professional services.

There has been active discussion within the government and Legislative Council on building an AI foundational model for the GBA legal sectors—as part of the broader vision for cross-border collaboration. Yet a fundamental challenge remains: how do we build such a model when the most valuable data in Hong Kong is also the most protected? This seminar explores the dilemma of legal AI adoption, where privileges, confidentiality obligations, and cross-border data flow are at issue. Drawing on practical experience, the seminar examines why working data in daily legal practice represents a valuable asset in law firms. It discusses the ground-level challenges firms face, from compliance concerns to the hidden costs of Shadow AI, and proposes pathways to enable confident AI adoption amongst Hong Kong law firms, big or small. Join us to understand how such organic transformation can ultimately fuel the regional AI model that the GBA envisions.
