講座摘要:

(English version only)
During the Cold War two major constraints shaped the contours of trading between the Blocs. While NATO limited commerce through embargo, the Socialist economic pattern imposed that foreign trade with the West be carried out by pro-communist organizations and middlemen. This paper will analyze the China-Europe case, uncovering the role played by those Western European entrepreneurs and organizations not loyal to Communism. Going through a number of examples, the paper will show that businessmen held China’s market crucial enough to circumvent embargo measures. Moreover, the paper will demonstrate that these players actively sought alternative solutions to the monopolium operated by pro-communist actors, pushing for establishing strong relations with Chinese state actors and lobbying with Western European political actors to cut away red competitors.
