Mr Leong Cheung

Leong Cheung has been the Executive Director of Charities and Community at The Hong Knog Jockey Club since 2014. In this capacity, he is also the co-chair of the Hong Kong Chapter of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

Prior to joining the Club, Cheung’s previous roles include being the Operating Partner with Bain Capital, Managing Director of Global Sourcing & Supply Chain at Esquel Group, founder and CEO of an education focused internet venture, and a senior consultant at the Boston Consulting Group. Cheung is also the co-founder and chairman of an innovative social enterprise, RunOurCity. He currently serves on the Elderly Commission and the Community Care Fund task force under the Commission on Poverty of the Hong Kong SAR Government. He is a Director of the Hong Kong Mortgage Corporation Limited and is an adjunct professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Cheung has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BBA from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Professor Gabriel M Leung

Gabriel Leung is the fortieth Dean of Medicine (2013-), inaugural Helen and Francis Zimmern Professor in Population Health and holds the Chair of Public Health Medicine at The University of Hong Kong. He was the last Head of Community Medicine (2012-3) at the University as well as Hong Kong’s first Under Secretary for Food and Health (2008-11) and fifth Director of the Chief Executive’s Office (2011-2) in government.

A specialist in public health medicine, Leung’s interdisciplinary work revolves around topics that have major population health impact locally, where Hong Kong is a reliable and unique epidemiologic sentinel for mainland China and the Chinese diaspora, or where Hong Kong is best placed to address the fundamental science at hand globally. Leung is one of Asia’s leading epidemiologists and global health exponents. He regularly advises national and international agencies including the World Health Organisation, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Boao Forum for Asia, Institut Pasteur, Japan Center for International Exchange and China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Professor Samuel Wong

Samuel Wong is a public health and family medicine specialist and is the Director of the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care (2020-). He is also the Associate Dean (Education) of the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong since July 2019.

As a family medicine doctor with public health training, Wong’s research focuses on the psychosocial aspects of health and health behaviour with a specific focus on designing and evaluating mental health interventions in community and primary care. He has been appointed by the Hong Kong SAR Government as a member of the Expert Committee in both Primary Healthcare and Non-communicable Disease (2018-2020) and is a member of the Advisory Council on Food and Environmental Hygiene (2015-2021). He is a member of the World Health Organisation’s COVID-19 social science research working group and co-leads the psychosocial interest subgroup.

COVID-19 is posing unprecedented challenges to the global community. In Hong Kong, we have been fighting the epidemic for several months. A concerted effort from different sectors in the community would be needed to win this battle.

COVID-19 is now a global pandemic, and the situation is constantly evolving. SDSN-HK hopes to share our experience in Hong Kong and look forward to explore with you:

  • Interventions adopted in Hong Kong to fight COVID-19
  • Psychobehavioural responses of the general public towards the outbreak, and insights for intervention and risk communication strategies
  • How we may mobilise support measures especially for vulnerable communities from philanthropic perspectivesHow we may address post-outbreak challenges and build the city’s resilience
