The awards featured 10 categories, including education, innovative technology, and sustainability, attracting nearly 400 entries from leading educational institutions across the Asia-Pacific region. CUHK’s win underscores the University’s steadfast commitment and outstanding contributions to advancing sustainability. CUHK received the award in recognition of its exemplary work in energy conservation and renewable energy, which has delivered significant environmental benefits. The University has also been proactive in fostering community engagement and cultivating long-term environmental awareness among its community.

Mrs Cecilia Lam, CUHK’s Chief Sustainability Officer and Director of the Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Office, remarked: “This award is a testament to the dedication of our entire CUHK community. We are proud of our progress and remain steadfast in our commitment to a sustainable, low-carbon future.”

CUHK is advancing towards carbon neutrality by reducing emissions from electricity consumption and engaging students and staff through innovative initiatives. Key efforts include appointing over 200 Energy Wardens, implementing the Energy Conservation Incentive Schemes and the Energy Efficiency Implementation Fund (EEIF) to promote energy-saving awareness and practices. As of October 2025, the EEIF has supported 54 projects from 50 CUHK units, resulting in estimated annual electricity savings worth about HK$700,000. They include LED lighting upgrades and the installation of curtain blinds and solar window films.

CUHK’s flagship Solar on Campus initiative aims to generate 2.5 million kWh of renewable energy annually, equivalent to about 2% of the University’s annual electricity consumption, through solar PV systems installed on 80 campus buildings. This initiative is projected to generate HK$20 million over 10 years via the government’s Feed-in Tariff scheme, with proceeds reinvested in further campus decarbonisation projects. The University has also introduced solar-powered electric vehicle charging facilities, further reducing the campus’s carbon footprint.

Learn more about CUHK’s sustainability initiatives: https://sdmatters.cuhk.edu.hk/sdg-2024

About EDUtech Asia

EDUtech Asia is one of the Asia-Pacific region’s largest education technology conferences and exhibitions, convening thousands of educators, policymakers, innovators and industry leaders annually in Singapore.
