The Centre for Innovation and Technology (CINTEC) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong\u2019s (CUHK) Faculty of Engineering recently organised the final and award ceremony of the sixth Green Innovation Competition. With the theme of \u201cClean Energy Society\u201d, the competition attracted 76 teams from local primary and secondary schools. It encouraged students to apply their STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) knowledge to develop innovative solutions addressing environmental challenges. The event aimed to cultivate students\u2019 technological creativity and environmental awareness, nurturing green-minded tech talent to drive sustainable development in Hong Kong.<\/p>\r\n
Dr Li Yiyang<\/strong>, Senior Lecturer from the Faculty of Engineering\u2019s Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, said: \u201cWe are delighted to see more schools participating for the first time this year. The finalists presented highly creative and technically impressive projects, showcasing their potential in green technology. This competition is not only a learning platform but also a catalyst for sparking creativity and promoting sustainability. Also, we believe that public voting further promoted students\u2019 creative ideas to the wider public, encourage them to adopt green living and raise environmental awareness.\u201d<\/p>\r\n The competition featured both primary and secondary school categories. Teams were encouraged to showcase their creativity, technological knowledge and skills to address environmental challenges related to building a clean energy society. Through video production and presentations, students experienced the entire technological research and development process, from conceptualisation, design and prototyping to iterative testing and refinement, with engineering logs used to document and share research findings.<\/p>\r\n In the preliminary round, each team submitted a two-minute video to present their ideas. A judging panel selected the top 10 teams from each category advanced to the finals. Finalists were required to deliver timed presentations and engaged in Q&A sessions with the judges. Meanwhile, an online public voting session attracted over 1,690 participants, who voted for the \u201cMost Popular Design Award\u201d in each category.<\/p>\r\n The award presentation was held on the same day.\u00a0LST Leung Kau Kui Primary School (Branch) was the champion in the primary school category with the project \u201cEnvironmentally Friendly AI Farm\u201d, while St Paul\u2019s Co-educational College won in the secondary school category with its \u201cSmart AI Food Waste Disposer\u201d. In the public vote, TWGHs Wong Yee Jar Jat Memorial Primary School and TWGHs Sun Hoi Directors\u2019 College were the winners of the Most Popular Design Award in the primary and secondary school categories respectively, with their projects \u201cSmart Classroom\u201d and \u201cGreen Community Smart Recycling Bin\u201d.
