The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has organised the “Class Acts” CUHK Online Talk Series. It helps students in ongoing learning at home and self-improvement by acquiring knowledge in different areas during the pandemic. In the fifth talk today (1 April), Professor Steven Gallagher, Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) from the Faculty of Law spoke on the topic “Chinese Shipwrecks and the Law of Treasure Hunting”. Through the video conferencing platform Zoom, Professor Gallagher explored the laws of treasure hunting with the participating CUHK students, staff members, alumni and members of the public, both local and overseas.

There are explicit regulations in international law covering the ownership of sunken treasure or shipwrecks found, and Chinese shipwrecks have had an important influence on the development of the law. In his talk, Professor Gallagher spoke about shipwrecks and treasure and explained the definition of people who find treasure and who can keep treasure. He also talked about the importance of Chinese shipwrecks in the development of the international law on treasure. Professor Gallagher responded to online questions from the participants in the Q&A session as well.

Professor Ian Morley from the Department of History will give the next talk on the topic “City Development and Urban History” to explore urban development and history with the participants.
