The 23rd Master of Architecture Graduation Show, organised by the School of Architecture of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), will be held from 27 May to 2 June 2019 (phase 1), at Exchange Square, Central, and from 3 June to 30 June 2019 (phase 2) at the AIT Building at CUHK. Mr. Wong Kam-sing, GBS, JP, Secretary for the Environment of the HKSAR Government, along with other guests of honour from leading architecture firms and institutes, will officiate at the opening ceremony on 28 May (Tuesday). Apart from celebrating the 23rd graduating class of the CUHK Master of Architecture programme, this year’s Graduation Show presents to the public the leading professional education offered by the CUHK School of Architecture, while also envisioning future directions for architectural design.

The theme of the Graduation Show this year is “Archipelago”, meaning a group of islands. It represents students’ individual explorations of different areas and techniques of architecture, while at the same time showing unity as a whole – that all of them are aware of social and environmental issues and committed to social change, as manifested in their architectural projects through intellectual ideas and innovative designs. Housing, conservation, traditional construction methods, sustainable urban design, public infrastructure, architectural technologies and computational design will be touched upon in close to 50 graduation projects presented in the forms of design layouts and models. Some of these graduation projects are:

Human-Machine-Environment Ecology:
An Experimental Performance Factory for the Blind in To Kwa Wan

The factory for the blind located in To Kwa Wan for over 50 years is going to be redeveloped, while the career prospect of the blind workers remains unclear. Graduate student Celia Yeh’s project proposes to revitalize the factory to retain its existing uses. It explores how robotic architecture could create an interactive museum-like space to open up the blind factory to the public, heightening interactions between the visually impaired and the community.

In Praise of Slowness: A Slow Factory as Alternative in Modern Speed

The modern and efficient transportation system is one of the driving forces of the hectic pace of life in Hong Kong. Through architectural design, graduate student Carol Wong explores how slowness can be contextualized in a fast-paced modern city. Situated in Hong Kong’s only above-ground transport interchange, Hung Hom Station, a Slow Factory is proposed to offer experimental “slow therapy” and a place of escape to daily commuters who can no longer cope with the stressful lifestyle, calling for a reflection on one’s body and mind.
