CUHK Presents 2018 Long Service Awards to 253 Members of Staff



The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) presented the 2018 Long Service Awards last month to 253 staff members who have been with the University for 15, 25 and 35 years. Twenty nine received the award for having 35 years’ service with CUHK, 132 for 25 years, and 92 for 15 years. The award presentation ceremony was officiated at by the Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky S. Tuan.

Among the 2018 winners, a few of them are members of the staff football club of CUHK, including Professor Henry N.C. Wong, Head of New Asia College, Professor Wong Kam-fai, Associate Dean (External Affairs), Faculty of Engineering, Mr. Ho Yuk-wing, Technician, Audio-Visual Division, and Mr. Chan Shu-pui, Chauffeur, Transport Office. The University’s staff football club was originally formed by a team of football-loving staff, dating back to the 1980s. It was officially registered as a statutory body of the University in 1992. Since then, it has represented CUHK in a number of football games against other institutions and universities, including the University of Hong Kong, Fukuoka University in Japan, Fudan University in Shanghai, and the South China Botanical Garden. Over the years, there has been a deep friendship established among the teammates. They always join together to play football and at other social gatherings, exemplifying a good team spirit of CUHK.

Professor Henry N.C. Wong is an alumnus of CUHK Department of Chemistry and returned to his alma mater to teach in 1983. He has also held administrative positions including Head of New Asia College, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, making valuable contributions to the development of the University and the College over the years. Professor Wong has been the president of the staff football club since 1996 and taken up the heavy responsibility of leading the club.

Professor Wong Kam-fai joined CUHK in 1993. He is currently Associate Dean (External Affairs) of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, and Director of the Centre for Innovation and Technology. In the 1990s, he developed the “Wisers”, which is the pioneer of CUHK’s innovative technology research and has a strong reputation in the information and communications technology industry. Professor Wong has served as the vice-president of the staff football club in recent years and usually plays as a striker in football games.

Mr. Ho Yuk-wing is a technician in the Audio-Visual Division. When he joined the University in 1983, he was mainly responsible for the production of auxiliary teaching materials such as slides and tapes. Nowadays, his main work has become video production for events or promotional purposes. Therefore, he has always shown up at many large scale events at the University. Mr. Ho is an officer of the staff football club who usually plays in a forward position.

Mr. Chan Shu-pui was originally employed by the Security Office of CUHK in 1983. In 1990, his supervisor at that time recommended him for transfer to the Transport Office as a school bus driver. He was later promoted to a VIP car driver, and sometimes he has been appointed to drive a media coach to carry reporters for CUHK’s media events. Mr. Chan is a member of the staff football club and mainly plays in defence.

The 25-year Long Service Award, introduced in 1988, has been given to around 1,590 staff members. The 35-year Long Service Award, inaugurated in 2008, has been given to around 200 staff members. The 15-year Long Service Award which was introduced in 2017 has been given to around 200 staff members.
