The nineteen-day “Lee Shiu Summer Programme 2018”, an international exploration leadership and cultural exchange programme, was completed recently. Organised by Chung Chi College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), in collaboration with the University Scholars Programme of the National University of Singapore (NUS), seventy-six elite students from Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore and the United States have joined the programme to explore across two major cities in Asia – Hong Kong and Singapore. The 2018 programme focused on the theme “Global Citizen – The Future You in 20 years”. A wide range of learning activities including lectures, mentorship, workshops, organisation visits and field trips were provided to let participants better understand the crises and challenges faced by different social classes.

The opening ceremony of the programme was officiated at by Dr. Lee Shiu and Dr. Jennie Mui Lee, initiators and sponsors of the programme, and Prof. Timothy W. Tong, President of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Dr. Lee Shiu told the story of his father, Dr. Lee Iu Cheung, and encouraged participants not to be defeated by the difficulties in life and to try their best to contribute to society. Dr. Jennie Mui Lee encouraged participants to value time, to treasure time, and not to let it pass by them inadvertently. Prof. Timothy W. Tong gave a talk at the ceremony about his views on “Global Citizen – The Future You in 20 Years”. He encouraged students to work hard for their career development and to strive to become socially responsible citizens who will have a positive impact on the world.

Participants were from eleven universities, including CUHK, NUS, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Lingnan University, University of Southern California, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University and Sun Yat-sen University.

A variety of experiential learning activities were offered to let participants better understand the crises and challenges faced by Hong Kong and Singapore. Activities included a heritage and eco tour at the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, a discovery tour of ethnic minority communities in Hong Kong, a poverty experience workshop at the Crossroads Foundation, an experience tour in the Jockey Club Life Journey Centre, a field trip to public housing estates in Hong Kong and Singapore, visits to NEWater and the Housing and Development Board of Singapore. Also, speakers from various sectors were invited to deliver lectures, including Mr. Ronnie Chan Chi-chung, Chairman of the Asia Society Hong Kong Centre and Hang Lung Group Limited, Dr. Philemon Choi Yue-wan, Founder of Breakthrough Limited and President of The Youth Foundation, Ms. Elizabeth Fung Hoi-yung, Political Assistant to the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, HKSAR, Mr. Ling Kar-kan, Former Director of Planning Department, HKSAR, Prof. Chong Tai-leung, Executive Director of Lau Chor Tak Institute of Global Economics and Finance, CUHK, Prof. Simon Tay, Chairman of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, and Prof. Peter Pang Yu-hin, Dean of Students of NUS.

The closing ceremony of the programme was held at Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium in NUS. It was officiated at by Dr. Lee Shiu and Dr. Jennie Mui Lee, initiators and sponsors of the programme, Prof. Fong Wing-ping, Head of Chung Chi College, CUHK, Prof. Low Boon-chuan, Deputy Director (Academic Matters) of University Scholars Programme, NUS and Prof. Albert Teo, Deputy Director (Student Life) of University Scholars Programme, NUS.
