2017 CUHK Alumni Homecoming Day
Alumni’s Staunch Support for Alumni Torch Fund

The Alumni Homecoming Day, an annual highlighted alumni event of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), was held yesterday (25 November), with the participation of over 5,000 CUHK alumni and their family members.  At the opening ceremony, Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK received a donation cheque of HK$1.08 million for ‘The Chinese University of Hong Kong Alumni Torch Fund’ (the Fund) from the fundraising committee formed by this year’s anniversary classes representatives. Adding to this sum, over HK$5 million has been raised since the Fund’s establishment in 2014.

The ‘School Bus Challenge’ was newly launched in the Alumni Homecoming Day this year.  As many alumni as possible were invited to get onto what was colloquially known as the ‘hot dog’ bus, a classic CUHK school bus. Each participant who successfully got in the bus was sponsored with a donation of HK$500 by three generous alumni donors, in support of the Fund.  The challenge was divided into male and female groups.  Ultimately a total of about 170 alumni and friends successfully squeezed onto the school bus in two rounds of challenges.  And the alumni donors have generously raised the donation amount up to HK$150,000.  The video of the activity can be viewed at CUHK facebook page: www.facebook.com/CUHKofficial/

In his welcoming speech, Prof. Joseph Sung conveyed a warm welcome to alumni coming back to their alma mater from all over the world and expressed his gratitude for their staunch support in various forms to the University during his term of office as the Vice-Chancellor.  ‘After the end of this December,’ said Professor Sung, ‘I will return to the Faculty of Medicine to teach and work on cancer research.  Though in a different capacity, I shall retain my dedication to the University and shall stay in touch with the alumni community.’

At this big annual event for all graduates, the alumni participants cherished the opportunity of reuniting with their classmates and teachers while enjoying various activities, such as the grand carnival, campus bus tours and thematic visits. They also had a great time in joining their college or school dinner and keeping up to date on the latest developments in the University.

About Alumni Torch Fund

The Fund was initiated by a group of devoted alumni from the anniversary classes in 2014.  It was founded with the objectives of helping CUHK alumni, in particular the young ones, by strengthening their competitive advantages and exposure to entrepreneur opportunities, and encouraging CUHK alumni in developing their expertise and achieving excellence in professional and academic fields.  It also aims to help the development and enhance the reputation of the University in the long run.  Apart from arranging the annual ‘CUHK Entrepreneur Day’ to showcase entrepreneurship projects by CUHK alumni and students, the Fund has also organized its first career expo, specifically designed for young alumni, in January 2017, on campus, featuring career talks on diverse industries, consultation sessions and recruitment booths.
