CUHK Enhances Collaborative Strength with Tsinghua University

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Tsinghua University (Tsinghua) have forged a strategic partnership by jointly establishing a research centre for the Chinese economy.  Prof. Qiu Yong, President of Tsinghua, visited CUHK on 29 May to sign collaboration agreements with Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK.  The two Presidents officiated at the inauguration ceremony of the CUHK-Tsinghua University Joint Research Centre for Chinese Economy.  The University also held a ceremony to present the appointment certificate to President Qiu who has accepted the appointment as the Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Science of CUHK. 

Professor Sung said during the ceremonies that President Qiu is a veteran scientist and has been actively promoting the development of national research and higher education with significant contributions in basic research and relevant knowledge transfer in material science.  ‘CUHK is very honoured to have President Qiu as Honorary Professor.  The two universities have long collaborated in teaching, student exchange and research cooperation.  The newly established joint research centre will utilize research sources of both universities in multilateral partnerships, expanding the depth of collaboration and providing greater innovative opportunities and directions, ‘ said Professor Sung. 

The CUHK and Tsinghua economics research groups have been in productive collaboration and at the forefront of research in the field of the Chinese economy. The CUHK-Tsinghua University Joint Research Centre for Chinese Economy will focus its effort on relevant research covering an extensive range of topics to include labour, trade, finance, industrial organization and history.  It will serve as an exchange platform for scholars all over the world to conduct cross-disciplinary research, and develop as a leading base globally on the Chinese economy.

In his speech after the appointment certificate presentation ceremony, President Qiu pointed out that both CUHK and Tsinghua emphasize the importance of talent nurturing in their motto, reflecting the same spirit of temperament and style in their missions.  He believes that the future collaboration of the two universities will grow with broader spaces and diversified areas.  As the President of Tsinghua and Honorary Professor of CUHK, he will endeavour to promote the development of bilateral cooperation.  After the presentation ceremony, President Qiu had a dialogue session to exchange opinions with CUHK members and students on the recent development of innovation and entrepreneurship. 

In the evening, the Symphony Orchestra of Tsinghua University held a Joint Orchestral Performance at Lee Hysan Concert Hall together with the students of CUHK Music Department in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).  Guests attending the event included Ms. Elsie Leung, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong Basic Law Committee; Prof. Li Lu, Director of Department of Education, Science and Technology of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government (LOCPG) in HKSAR; and Prof. Wang Zhenmin, Director of Department of Law of LOCPG, together with students, staff and alumni of both universities, making up an audience of over 250 people.

A number of classical and pop items were played by the 55 musicians and 2 soprano singers from Tsinghua and CUHK.  In their opening speeches, the presidents of the two universities recognized the multiple significances of the day, the close friendship of the two universities as demonstrated, and the best wishes of the two universities for the bright future of Hong Kong and the nation. 

Collaboration between CUHK and Tsinghua 

Since CUHK’s establishment of a partnership with Tsinghua in 1985, both universities have been involved in concerted efforts ranging from national research collaboration and joint research units to curriculum development and student exchange.  Both universities are members of Association of University Presidents of China and PINE League.  CUHK also joined the China-UK Humanities Alliance for Higher Education and the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Alliance of China, the two important university alliances for promoting cross-cultural collaboration in humanities and innovation and entrepreneurship education in China.  CUHK Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph Sung has been appointed as the Honorary Professor of Tsinghua.
