CUHK appoints University Officers



The Council of the Chinese University of Hong Kong has approved the re-appointment of Prof. Poon Wai-yin as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for a period of three years, with effect from 1 May 2017 and the appointment of Prof. Dennis K.P. Ng as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for a period of three years, with effect from 1 August 2017. It has also approved the appointment of Prof. Edwin H.Y. Chan as Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students for a period of three years, with effect from 1 August 2017.

In addition, the Council has approved the re-appointment of Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan as Head of Shaw College for a further period of three years, with effect from 1 July 2017, the re-appointment of Prof. Sun Sai-ming, Samuel as (Founding) Master of S.H. Ho College for a further period of one year, with effect from 1 August 2017, the re-appointment of Prof. Lau Wan-yee, Joseph as (Founding) Master of Lee Woo Sing College for a further period of three years, with effect from 1 January 2018, and the   appointment of Prof. Anthony T.C. Chan as Master of Wu Yee Sun College for a period of four years, with effect from 1 August 2017, succeeding Prof. Rance P.L. Lee. 

The Council has also approved the re-appointment of Prof. Lutz-Christian Wolff as Dean of the Graduate School for a further period of three years, with effect from 1 September 2017. 

The current Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Michael K.M. Hui will return to the Department of Marketing as Professor of Marketing on 1 August 2017, whilst the current Associate Vice-President, Prof. Fung Tung will return to the Department of Geography and Resource Management as Professor on the same day.  Professor Hui and Professor Fung have been serving as Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Associate Vice-President respectively since 1 January 2009.  Professor Hui had also served as Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for more than four years prior to taking up his role as Pro-Vice-Chancellor.  Prof. Rance P.L. Lee has been serving as (Founding) Master of Wu Yee Sun College since 1 August 2011.  His term of office will expire on 31 July 2017.  The University expresses its deepest gratitude and appreciation to them for their past support and sterling contribution.

Prof. Poon Wai-yin Re-appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor

Prof. Poon Wai-yin is currently Professor in the Department of Statistics and she has been Pro-Vice-Chancellor since 2015.  Joining CUHK in 1987, Professor Poon has served as Associate Dean (Education) in the Faculty of Science, and Director of the Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research (CLEAR).  She was appointed as Associate Vice-President in 2014.  Professor Poon obtained her BSc in Mathematics and MPhil in Statistics from CUHK, PhD in Biostatistics from the University of California at Los Angeles, and MBA with Distinction from the University of Hull.  Her outstanding teaching has earned her a number of accolades, including teaching awards granted by UGC, the University, and the Faculty of Science.

Prof. Dennis K.P. Ng Appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor

Prof. Dennis K.P. Ng joined CUHK in 1994 and is currently Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students, as well as Professor in the Department of Chemistry.   Professor Ng obtained his BSc and MPhil degrees from CUHK and in 1993 he obtained a DPhil degree from the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow and Chartered Chemist of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Chartered Scientist of the Science Council, UK. He has received a number of teaching awards from the University and the Faculty of Science, in recognition of his outstanding teaching.  Throughout the years, he has put great effort into enhancing student services and fostering the whole-person development of students. Professor Ng has also made significant contributions to curriculum development and assessment in Hong Kong’s secondary education by participating in various government committees. 

Prof. Edwin H.Y. Chan Appointed Associate Vice-President and University Dean of Students

Professor Chan is Professor and Director of the Master of Science Degree Programme in Biochemical and Biomedical Sciences at the School of Life Sciences. He is also Associate Head and Dean of General Education of Chung Chi College.  He has been the Chairperson of the Joint Committee on New Student Orientation (2009-2014), and has been the Warden of Postgraduate Halls since 2005, and a member of the Staff-Student Centres Management Committee since 2012.  He is currently the Chairperson of the Services Units Management Sub-Committee and the Pommerenke Student Centre Management Sub-Committee, as well as a member of the Steering Committee for Promoting Personal Development through Social and Civic Engagement. Professor Chan received undergraduate training in biochemistry from CUHK, doctoral training at the University of Cambridge (UK), and postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania (USA). He was a recipient of CUHK Young Researcher Award and the Genetics Society of China 13th Ju-Chi Li Animal Genetics Prize.

Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan Re-appointed Head of Shaw College

Prof. Andrew C.F. Chan has been Head of Shaw College since 2010.  At present, he is the Director of Executive MBA Programme in CUHK.  Professor Chan graduated from CUHK in 1977.  He then obtained his MBA from The University of California at Berkeley and his PhD from CUHK.  Professor Chan is an expert in strategic marketing, cross-cultural marketing, China marketing and a professional business negotiator.  He had worked for Bank of America and IBM World Trade Corporation before starting his teaching career.

Prof. Sun Sai-ming, Samuel Re-appointed (Founding) Master of S.H. Ho College

Professor Sun is the Founding Master of S. H. Ho College.  Currently, he is an Emeritus Professor of Biology and a Research Professor of Biology at CUHK.  Professor Sun is a world renowned agrobiotechnologist and the first scientist in the world to have cloned a plant gene. In recent years, his rice improvement research works have included enhancing the rice nutrition and yield.  His research achievements have won him international recognition.  He is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a Member of the International Eurasia Academy of Sciences.  Professor Sun led his team in obtaining approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology for the establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology (CUHK) to increase crop productivity and improve relevant technology.

Prof. Lau Wan-yee, Joseph Re-appointed (Founding) Master of Lee Woo Sing College

Professor Lau is the Founding Master of Lee Woo Sing College. He joined the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK in 1988 and is currently Research Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a well-known expert on hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery. Professor Lau received his MBBS from The University of Hong Kong in 1972, underwent surgical training at the University of London in the UK, and obtained his MD in 1995 and DSc in 2010 from CUHK. He has made enormous contributions to radical resection for cancers of the liver and the hilar bile, as well as to liver transplantation, and he is a founder of liver transplantation in Hong Kong and South-east Asia. Professor Lau’s medical achievements have won him numerous honours, including fellowships and honorary fellowships in over 10 specialty colleges in China and overseas.

Prof. Anthony T.C. Chan Appointed Master of Wu Yee Sun College

Joining CUHK in 1993, Prof. Anthony T.C. Chan is currently Associate Dean (External Affairs) and Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation Professor of Clinical Oncology of the Faculty of Medicine, as well as Associate Master of Wu Yee Sun College.  Professor Chan graduated from University College London in 1988 and received postgraduate training in the Royal Marsden Hospital, United Kingdom. He is Director of the Hong Kong Cancer Institute, Director of the Sir YK Pao Centre for Cancer, and Associate Director of the State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China. Professor Chan is a Council member of the Hong Kong College of Physicians.  He was invited to give the Sir David Todd lecture in 2008 by the College and delivered the Gerald Choa Memorial Lecture in 2013.

Prof. Lutz-Christian Wolff Re-appointed Dean of Graduate School 

Prof. Lutz-Christian Wolff joined CUHK in 2005 as a founding member of the Faculty of Law (then the School of Law).  He has served as Associate Dean (Faculty Development) and Director of the Master of Laws Programmes in International Economic Law, Common Law and Chinese Business Law.  In 2014, he took up his current position as Dean of Graduate School and was awarded the title ‘Wei Lun Professor of Law’ in the same year. Professor Wolff received his first and second PhD from Passau University, Germany, in 1990 and 1997 respectively.  Professor Wolff has received various CUHK awards for his outstanding teaching and research achievements.
