The Green Mini Movies Festival 2017, hosted by the Go Green Community – Jockey Club Carbon Reduction Partnership Scheme of CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia (Gaia) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), was an encouraging success. The annual festival included a mini movies workshop and competition, visits to green facilities and an experience-sharing session. The aim of the festival was to raise students’ awareness of climate change and carbon footprints through the production of green mini movies, as well as to promote a green lifestyle to the public through the mini movies made by the students. The champions of the green mini movies competition were Lok Sin Tong Primary School and the inter-school team of CCC Fong Yun Wah Secondary School and Yuen Long Public Secondary School.

About 190 teachers, students and student parents from 28 schools attended the award ceremony of the Green Mini Movies Festival 2017 held recently. Professor Fung Tung, Associate Vice-President of CUHK, Ms Vivian Lee, Senior Charities Manager of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Dr Rebecca Lee, Founder of Polar Museum Foundation and Honorary Fellow of CUHK, and Dr Tang Chin-cheung, Chairman of Ecobus, presented the awards to the winning students.

Some students who participated in the festival shared their feelings, ‘We visited a number of websites for information on climate change and carbon footprints before coming up with the theme of our green mini movie. We are deeply aware of the fact that problems from climate change are getting more serious every day. This awareness strongly affirms our commitment to promote and adopt a low-carbon lifestyle.’ They will share their green mini movies with their families, friends and the public to help inspire everyone to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle to mitigate climate change.

CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia

CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia is a five-year community engagement programme, launched in 2012 by CUHK, with a generous donation of HK$70 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. In support of Gaia’s commitment to paving the way to a sustainable future for Hong Kong, the programme’s aim is to promote environmental conservation and sustainability in local communities, through public education and carbon-reduction partnerships with schools and non-governmental organisations.

The first of its kind in the world, the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (MoCC), maintained by Gaia, is open to the public with free admission. The MoCC showcases the ‘Three Poles’ (the North Pole, the South Pole and Mount Everest) collection of renowned Hong Kong explorer Dr Rebecca Lee, innovative research on the environment, energy and sustainability initiated by CUHK, and the Jockey Club’s initiatives to promote green living in the community.
