The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) recently presented Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence to eight outstanding students, in recognition of their remarkable achievements.

At the award ceremony, Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, extended heartfelt congratulations to the eight recipients. He remarked that CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence not only honoured the present accomplishments of our awardees but also their potential and aspiration to become future leaders. He hoped the scholarship recipients would treasure their curiosity, persistence and have the courage to push forward the frontier of whatever field they find themselves in. CUHK is a place that combines tradition with modernity and brings together China and the West. It is a vibrant environment, where ideas flourish and where there is a strong commitment to nurturing talent, empowering students and shaping them not just as scholars, but also as future leaders and change makers.

Raymond Chan Kwok-wai, a second-year student in Medicine (Global Physician-Leadership Stream), is passionate about healthcare equity and volunteering. During high school, he provided underprivileged students with free tutoring and taught English to children with special educational needs in Thailand on two occasions, experiences that strengthened his awareness of healthcare disparities. He later volunteered at Queen Mary’s Hospital’s psychiatric rehabilitation clinic and nursing homes, participated in Alzheimer’s research and organised several medical service trips to Nepal to promote healthcare equity. Raymond expressed gratitude for the scholarship, viewing it as encouragement in his pursuit of medical equity.

Katie Tang Wing-lam, a second-year student in Global Economics and Finance, is eager to embrace new challenges. In high school, she served as Chairperson of the Christian Fellowship and a Girl Guide leader, while participating in table tennis and athletics and singing in a choir, representing her school in competitions, which she said fostered resilience in facing challenges. Upon joining CUHK, she became Marketing Officer for the Society of Global Economics and Finance, organising student activities, and joined AIESEC, an international youth organisation, where she has planned, designed and led various events and conferences, offering one-on-one coaching to support other members’ growth. Katie saw the scholarship as an inspiration to continue growing, striving for excellence and exploring all possibilities.

Since 2021-22 academic year, CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence have been offered to the most outstanding freshers admitted to full-time undergraduate programmes, irrespective of the admission channel and residency. Each year, the scheme gives non-renewable awards of HK$50,000 to eight students. Selection is based on both academic and non-academic achievements, including entrance results, first-term academic results, language proficiency, track record of distinguished leadership, commitment to service and awards attained.
