The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) warmly welcomes the Government of the HKSAR’s announcement today (9 July) confirming the Pak Shek Kok MTR Station development plan, which is expected to commence operation on or before 2033. Pak Shek Kok Station will combine with the existing University Station to form a dual hub framework, further enhancing the transportation infrastructure network of the campus and surrounding areas while strengthening connections among the University, Hong Kong Science Park, and neighbouring communities. The implementation of Pak Shek Kok MTR Station development will play a pivotal role in promoting industry-academia-research collaboration, gathering elite talent, and driving synergies with the development of Northern Metropolis University Town. It also holds significant strategic importance for the long-term evolution of Hong Kong’s international innovation and technology (I&T) ecosystem.

Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor and President, said: “CUHK welcomes the Government’s commitment to the Pak Shek Kok Station project, and we express sincere gratitude to the Government and the industry for their long-standing support of the region’s development. The project aligns closely with our Area 39 initiative and the CUHK Strategic Plan 2026–2030, supporting innovative research and education.”

Unleashing a core engine for international exchange

Professor Lo added: “The new station will enhance connectivity between CUHK, the Hong Kong Science Park, and the Northern Metropolis, facilitating the convergence of global talent, research capabilities, and innovative resources, further expanding the scope of industry-academia-research collaboration. It will also improve campus accessibility and support deeper knowledge exchange, research collaboration, and the translation of research outcomes, leveraging CUHK’s unique advantages in driving Hong Kong’s development as an international innovation and technology centre.”

Professor Lo continued: “By improving access to the vast campus areas, the station will benefit students and staff, while facilitating the hosting of major international academic conferences in Hong Kong to support the city’s growth as an international hub for higher education and academic exchange.”

Currently, CUHK is positioning Area 39 as the University’s I&T and teaching hub to create synergy with the adjacent Hong Kong Science Park. Convenient transportation will help transform this entire cluster into a global hub for industry-academia-research exchange, providing comprehensive and convenient living amenities for local and overseas talent. CUHK looks forward to maintaining close communication and collaboration with the Government and various stakeholders to jointly advance the project, integrate CUHK’s Area 39 campus with the adjacent Hong Kong Science Park cluster into a “core engine” for international industry-academia-research exchange, actively draw global top talent, and contribute significantly to Hong Kong’s overall I&T ecosystem.
