The national finals of the “China International College Students’ Innovation Competition (CICSIC) 2025” were recently successfully concluded. Eight teams from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) stood out in the first-ever “Hong Kong and Macao Regional Competition” this year, earning the honour of representing Hong Kong in the national finals. The teams achieved remarkable results, winning five gold, two silver and one bronze awards. Among them, the gold-winning project “Next generation data center interconnects with integrated neuromorphic photonic processor” also earned third place nationally, breaking Hong Kong’s historical record at the competition and bringing credit to the city.

Professor Benny Zee Chung-ying, Director of CUHK’s Knowledge Transfer Office, said: “As a world-renowned, comprehensive research university, CUHK is dedicated to nurturing talent, advancing scientific innovation and promoting industry-academia-research collaboration, contributing to the development of Hong Kong and the nation, and supporting the development of a leading country in education and science and technology. We are proud of our students’ outstanding achievements and look forward to their continued breakthroughs and achievements.”

Since its launch by the Ministry of Education in 2015, CICSIC has taken place annually, with the aim of encouraging students to engage in technological innovation and of fostering exchange and cooperation among young people in China and overseas. It has become one of the most influential innovation practice platforms globally. In addition to the new Hong Kong and Macao Regional Competition, this year also saw CICSIC expand its global reach with seven regional events, in Europe, Africa and elsewhere. The 2025 competition was launched in April and was jointly organised by the Ministry of Education, 10 other Central Government departments and the People’s Government of Henan Province. It received 6.19 million project submissions involving 24.43 million participants from 5,673 universities across 161 countries and regions.
