The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will host the MeGoOut Countryside Culture Inclusion Festival on 1 July (Wednesday) on Kat O Island, Sha Tau Kok. Members of the public are welcome to join and experience the island’s unique coastal scenery and rich cultural heritage first-hand.

Held in celebration of the 29th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), the festival will feature a vibrant programme showcasing Hong Kong’s east-meets-west cultural fusion, diversity and creative vitality. It aims to reinterpret the connection between the city’s rural culture and urban spirit through Hakka culture, fishing village traditions, and the creative power of youth.

The event will feature a rich line-up of activities, including the flag-raising ceremony marking the HKSAR anniversary, Hakka unicorn dances, land dragon boat performances, a creative Hakka fashion contest, a cosplay parade and guided tours of Kat O, and live performances by CUHK New Asia College Band.

Officiating guests at the opening ceremony will include Professor Lisa Wan Chun-ying, Associate Professor at the CUHK School of Hotel and Tourism Management; Ms Leung Fung-wah, District Governor of Lions Clubs International District 303; and Mr Ho Ma-sang and Mr Chow Siu-wah, Village Heads of Kat O. Funded by the Rural Conservation Office, part of the Environment and Ecology Bureau, and organised by CUHK’s School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM), this creative cultural festival brings together sustainable fashion, youth creativity, rural culture and community co-creation. It promotes rural revitalisation, facilitates the living transmission of intangible cultural heritage, and supports the long-term sustainable development of local communities.

About MeGoOut

Initiated by CUHK’s SHTM and funded by the Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme of the Countryside Conservation Office, MeGoOut aims to showcase the unique natural and cultural heritage of three ancient villages: Mui Tsz Lam, Kuk Po and Kat O. The project strives to build a premier brand for in-depth eco-tourism in rural Hong Kong. By organising immersive village tours and events, it encourages public participation in natural and cultural conservation, promoting sustainable development, with long-lasting positive impacts on rural communities. The name “MeGoOut” puns on the names of the three villages, Mui Tsz Lam (Me), Kuk Po (Go) and Kat O (Out), reflecting the philosophy of stepping out of the city, journeying between the mountains and the sea, and discovering the many pleasures of Hong Kong’s countryside.
