Symposium on Diversity and Inclusion – “First But Not Last: Women Leaders Reimagining Justice in Asia”

The Symposium on Diversity and Inclusion – “First But Not Last: Women Leaders Reimagining Justice in Asia was attended by distinguished guests, including Dr the Honourable Cheung Kwok-kwan (8th right), Deputy Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR Government; Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming (7th left), Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK; and Mr Roden Tong (5th left), President of The Law Society of Hong Kong.

Distinguished speakers included The Right Honourable Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat (2nd left), the first female Chief Justice of Malaysia; Dr the Honourable Elsie Leung Oi-sie (2nd right), the first female Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR Government; and Ms Melissa Pang (1st right), the first female President of The Law Society of Hong Kong.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Faculty of Law at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK LAW), the Symposium on Diversity and Inclusion – “First But Not Last: Women Leaders Reimagining Justice in Asia” successfully concluded recently. Hosted by The Law Society of Hong Kong and supported by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and CUHK LAW, the symposium was intended to recognise the outstanding contributions of female legal leaders to the development of the judiciary in Asia, promote the continued advancement of the legal profession and uphold the core values of diversity, inclusion and public service

In his welcome remarks, Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, stated that the symposium reflected the shared commitment of CUHK LAW and The Law Society of Hong Kong to the advancement of the legal profession and to the values of diversity, inclusion and public service.

Moderated by Mr Roden Tong, President of The Law Society of Hong Kong, the symposium brought together The Right Honourable Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tuan Mat, the first female Chief Justice of Malaysia; Dr the Honourable Elsie Leung Oi-sie, the first female Secretary for Justice in the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China; and Ms Melissa Pang, the first female President of The Law Society of Hong Kong. They shared their perspectives on fostering diversity, inclusion and ethical leadership within the legal profession.

The symposium garnered the valued support of distinguished guests, including Dr the Honourable Cheung Kwok-kwan, Deputy Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR Government; the Honourable Nick Chan Hiu-fung, Member of the Legislative Council; Mr Chan Chak-ming, Director of Legal Aid; Professor Isabella Poon, Provost of CUHK; Professor Sham Mai-har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) of CUHK; Professor Jiang Liwen, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Affairs) of CUHK; Professor Xi Chao, Dean of CUHK LAW; Mrs Amelia Wong, University Secretary of CUHK; Ms Kitty Yu, Registrar of CUHK; Professor Feng Lin, Dean of the School of Law of City University of Hong Kong; Professor Shahla Ali, Associate Dean (International Affairs) of the Faculty of Law of The University of Hong Kong; and Mr Amirali Nasir and Ms Careen Wong, Vice Presidents of The Law Society of Hong Kong.
