The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Xiaomi Corporation (Xiaomi) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday (25 June) to establish a strategic collaboration framework, combining CUHK’s strengths in interdisciplinary research and talent development with Xiaomi’s expertise in industrial applications and technology ecosystems. The partnership aims to foster impactful academia-industry collaboration and accelerate the translation of research outcomes into real-world applications.

Under the MoU, CUHK and Xiaomi will collaborate across key areas including AI, information management, fintech, smart logistics, supply chain management, sustainability, healthcare and big data management. Initiatives will cover joint research and technology application projects, academic and industry exchanges, talent development programmes, knowledge transfer and commercialisation, as well as seminars, forums and other platforms to promote innovation and strengthen industry-academia engagement.

The MoU was signed by Professor Allen Chan Kwan-chee, CUHK’s Associate Vice-President (Knowledge Transfer), and Mr Qu Heng, Vice President of Xiaomi Corporation and Chairman of the company’s Technology Committee. Both parties expressed their commitment to leveraging complementary strengths to advance research commercialisation, foster innovation and entrepreneurship, and nurture future-ready talent, contributing to Hong Kong’s development as a hub for technology innovation and talent cultivation.

Professor Chan remarked: “This MoU marks a significant milestone in CUHK’s efforts to advance innovation and talent development, and provides a robust platform for collaboration with Xiaomi across multiple disciplines. By combining CUHK’s research excellence and talent strengths with Xiaomi’s industrial expertise, we look forward to translating outstanding research outcomes into practical applications that create meaningful societal impact.”

Mr Qu said: “Xiaomi is committed to bringing cutting-edge technologies from the laboratory to industry, and the deep integration of academia, research and industry is a key priority. CUHK’s research strengths in AI align closely with Xiaomi’s technology roadmap. With our end-to-end capabilities from R&D to mass production, we look forward to leveraging our complementary advantages to bring advanced technologies to large-scale applications.”

The collaboration marks an important step in strengthening academia-industry integration between a leading university and a top technology enterprise. Looking ahead, CUHK and Xiaomi will build on this partnership to deepen institutional collaboration, promote cross-sector innovation, and translate shared visions into tangible, high-impact outcomes.
