The Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (HKIAPS) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Center for Shanghai Culture Studies at Shanghai University, with support from the Shanghai Tang Junyuan Education Foundation and in collaboration with CUHK’s Institute of Chinese Studies, jointly launched the two-day “2nd Shanghai-Hong Kong Cultural Academic Forum” on the CUHK campus today (24 October). The event attracted over 80 participants in person, including local scholars and members of the public on its first day, while nearly 100 participants joined the online live stream and discussions.

The opening ceremony was graced by distinguished officiating guests who delivered opening remarks, including Mr Henry Tang, Chairman of the Shanghai Tang Junyuan Education Foundation; Professor Wu Jianyong, Secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai University (participated in video mode); Professor Fanny Cheung, Honorary Senior Advisor of HKIAPS; and Ms Chen Dong, Director of the Center for Shanghai Culture Studies.

In their keynote speeches, Professor Joseph Ting Sun-pao, Adjunct Professor in CUHK’s Department of History, and Professor Xiong Yuezhi, Research Fellow and former Vice President of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, delivered in-depth analyses of and insightful remarks on the “Historical Development of Hong Kong and Shanghai between 1841 and 1941” and “Sun Yat-sen and the Mutual Learning of Civilisations”, respectively.

To promote cultural exchange and academic collaboration between Shanghai and Hong Kong, and to explore new pathways for mutual learning and progress between the two cities, Shanghai University held the first Shanghai-Hong Kong Cultural and Academic Forum last year. It provided an innovative platform for cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the cities, inspiring young students from both to pursue broader academic aspirations while contributing to the development of culture, society and youth initiatives. Building on last year’s success, this year’s forum is being held at CUHK. Bringing together scholars from around the world, it features in-depth discussions on the cultural development of and historical connections and future collaboration between Shanghai and Hong Kong. It included four thematic sessions featuring a total of 16 speakers, who delivered speeches across multiple fields, including literature, art, migration and business, film and music, and migration and commerce. The forum is successfully establishing a diverse dialogue platform and fostering exchange among academics in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
