12 CUHK projects funded by 2025/26 NSFC/RGC Joint Research Scheme and Collaborative Research Scheme
The Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong recently announced the funding results of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)/RGC Joint Research Scheme (JRS) and Collaborative Research Scheme (CRS) 2025/26. The JRS is funding eleven projects at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), while the CRS is funding one.
Professor Sham Mai-har, CUHK’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), said: “CUHK has always been dedicated to advancing cross-regional and interdisciplinary research collaboration and innovation. The 12 projects funded by JRS and CRS cover frontier technology fields including life science, information technology, new materials science, and marine and environmental science. CUHK will continue to deepen collaboration with top academic institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Zhejiang University, and will proactively expand academic exchange networks to promote the transformation and application of impactful research outcomes, making greater contributions to social development and national advancement in science and technology.”
The 11 Principal Investigators from CUHK who received funding from the JRS are, in alphabetical order of family name: Professor Chen Yue from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, Professor Huang Zhifeng from the Department of Chemistry, Professor Jin Bangti from the Department of Mathematics, Professor Patrick Lee Pak-ching from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Professor Lu Yi-chun from the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, Professor Teng Xiangbin from the Department of Psychology, Professor Xu Qiang from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Professor Yang Yijian from the Department of Sports Science and Physical Education, Professor Yuan Yixuan from the Department of Electronic Engineering, Professor Zhai Shixian from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Professor Zhang Lin from the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care.
In addition, one collaborative research project between Hong Kong China and the Chinese Mainland is being funded by the NSFC/RGC CRS, led by Professor Mao Chuanbin from the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
The NSFC/RGC JRS and CRS support four-year research proposals jointly submitted by Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong researchers. The JRS aims to promote collaboration between researchers and teams in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland that complement the strengths of both sides. Each successful Hong Kong JRS applicant receives a maximum grant of HK$1.25 million. The CRS aims to support larger-scale collaborative research across disciplines and universities in the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong, with a view to enhancing research output and impact. Each successful Hong Kong CRS applicant receives a maximum grant of HK$3.6 million.
