Biography of Speaker:

Professor King is currently an Academician of Academia Sinica (elected in 1994). He was the 5th Vice-Chancellor of CUHK (2002 – 2004), the 7th Head of New Asia College, CUHK (1977 – 1985), and was appointed as Emeritus Professor of CUHK Sociology. His research focuses on the modernization and modernity of China, and the role of traditions played in social-cultural transformation. His major works includes Chinese Society and Culture (1992), Chinese Politics and Culture (1997), The Idea of University (2001), Sociology and China Studies (2013) and China’s Great Transformation: Selected Essays on Confucianism, Modernization, and Democracy (2018) etc., making remarkable contributions to world of modern Chinese Sociology.

In celebration of New Asia College’s 70th Anniversary, distinguished scholars have been invited to deliver a series of public lectures, exploring topics of their own professions. The College is honored to have Professor Ambrose Y.C. King to deliver the 2nd lecture of the series.
