Synopsis of Lecture:

The latest wave of record high temperatures with increasing weather extremes, including destructive droughts, storms and deadly floods worldwide, are clear signals of tremendously accelerating global warming.

We urgently need a strategy to cool down the Earth. Such a strategy should be based on a swift transition to a zero-emission economy based on 100% renewable energy sources. It is the prerequisite for achieving the Paris Agreement goal, for securing sustainable food and energy supply and for resolving conflicts over resources.

As costs of solar, wind energy and battery storage keep falling, a global energy system based on 100% renewables is no longer a long-term vision, but a tangible reality. The latest study by the Energy Watch Group and Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland has proved that a global transition to 100% renewable electricity is feasible at every hour throughout the year and is more cost-effective than the existing system, which is largely based on fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Energy transition is no longer a question of technical feasibility or economic viability, but of political will.

In his lecture Hans-Josef Fell will elaborate on his proposal for an effective climate protection strategy and present the results of a ground breaking study by the Energy Watch Group on 100% renewable energy globally.

Remarks:

The Lecture will be conducted in English with Cantonese simultaneous interpretation
