Event Details:

The “boneless method” is one of the traditional techniques of Chinese painting. Unlike the common approach that relies on outlined contours, this technique emphasizes the use of dyeing, colour application and ink work to shape forms. It makes the subject highly expressive without confining with lines. This method can be applied to a wide range of genres, including birds-and-flowers, landscapes, and figures, and can achieve styles that vary from finely detailed and delicate to freely expressive and spirited.

This course centers on the birds-and-flowers genre and the masterpieces by renowned Chinese painters, offering systematic instruction in the fundamental techniques of boneless painting. Students will be guided to gradually explore their own creative vocabulary and develop their own distinctive artistic style. In addition to common presentation formats such as hanging scrolls and framed glass-mounted pieces, the course will also introduce various mounting styles including album leaves and handscrolls, broadening students’ understanding of how finished works can be presented. To enrich the learning experience, the course will invite various artists and speakers to share their perspectives on different stylistic approaches and techniques found across Chinese painting traditions. Upon completion of the course, students will collaborate in planning and organizing an exhibition, showcasing the outcomes of their learning journey.

All CUHK undergraduates and full-time staff members are welcome (Priority for New Asia students)!
